Cool Silver 911SC Emblem Needed.....

Anyone know of a source for a silver 911SC emblem that attaches via adhesive tape? I am repainting the engine lid on my 1980 SC and need a new silver emblem that will "show up" against the Black Metallic paint. It appears that our host only carries the Black emblems.

They are all black when new. The 'silver' ones have faded from the sun. Junk yard might have one, or someone here.

Cool SC emblem...

The one that I just removed from my engine lid appears to have been silver originally. Also, it was attached by way of an adhesive strip instead of pins and speednuts. As there are no holes in the engine lid, I assume it was original to the car or possibly could have been replaced by one of the (4) previous owners.

Thanks,

tcar, that's not correct.

It's just paint, and Porsche figured out how to paint the scripts/emblems at least two different colors.

Yes, there are silver ones from the factory. Mine is original silver, never had any paint on it. Why were some silver and some black? Anyone know?

Also, I thought all the SC badges were held onto the deck lid by bolts not adhesive.

Have you tried any of the Porsche parts recyclers for an original silver? You could also do a want to buy ad in the classified section.

prob. for contrast on different color cars. Some dark ones may have faded. On early cars, the grills fade and turn silver - tho there wre silver grills too, once upon a time...

I don't know of any good, simple rule that tells you that any given item on a given year would be faded if it is now silver... i.e. "all of those were made black" type rules.

i happen to have an extra brand new silver SC decklid badge.....Fred you have a PM

just for reference, mine is factory silver and the badge should be attached with 4 speed nuts. if it was glued on, that may be cause a new owner of the car wanted a badge on it and it either was a factory delete or the previous owner put a decklid on it without a badge or holes. during a repaint, etc....

I believe it was the newer "Carerra" emblems which were glued.

Is there any way to tell if your silver badge was silver originally or if it was black and faded to silver (just like the targa scripts do)?

My car had a silver 911SC Script with mounting pins, but when removed the back of it was black - What do you think - silver or black originally (champagne colored car)?

a silver badge may have -some- silver paint on the back side.

From what I've noted, silver is usually on the metallic painted cars, black on the solid colors. (my Platinum Metallic has a silver badge)

island911 - yes i also have platinum metallic. Also have seen some 1980 Wiessachs (special colored plat. metallic) with blackish/bronzish scripts.

Have the 1981 911SC dealer brochure with a guards red targa (non metallic i believe) pictured in it with silver script (brand new car).

I think i am down to this: The black one I put on my platinum metallic targa (thinking all were black and mine had just faded) looks cool so I'm sticking with it.

Perhaps just one of those fun porsche mysteries that make the cars the unique pieces they are.....

Cool Now I know the "rest of the story"....

Last night when I was putting the engine lid back on the car, I discovered that the plastic grill did not fit the lid opening exactly correctly. Once I noticed that, I scraped some of the old emblem tape off the back of the 911SC emblem and found where the pins had been cut off! The engine lid on my car is apparently off an earlier car that originally had a chrome grill and no lid mounted emblem! I had to trim some of the edges on the plastic air grill to get it to fit properly. Oh, well, it is over 25 years old and I am now the 5th owner (last 5 years). When the new emblem arrives, I make a template, drill the holes and go on enjoying the car!! At least one of the previous owners was kind enough to install a pop-off valve and pressure fed tensioners!

My original emblem was all chipped so I removed it to clean it up for painting. I used 0000 steel wool to remove, and liked the look so much I simply reinstalled it silver. If you like the silver look, just do that. The adhesive tape is available at any good automotive paint supplier, as a lot of the emblems on cars now are attached that way.

I may go back to black at some point, but the silver looks kinda retro.

SCs all had pins and speednuts mounting. Tape used on Carraras. If no holes in the lid, its from a later car.

Peter Zimmerman, wrote 'Used 911 handbook', said they're all black from factory. Look at the backside of the silver ones, most are black, that's the original color, he says.

Early 911's had chrome engine grills.

That's a bit misleading. Sure, the base plastic is black; but, some are also painted silver.

Plastic cannot be anodized, most commonly aluminum is anodized...
