Engine Oil Thermostat Orientation

I cleaned the gunk around the thermostat and removed it without a problem. Cleaned it up and put new (green) o-ring but now I can't remember the orientation.

Does it matter?

thanks,

Alex

Bentley nor 101 nor a search revealed any info on orientation. It might now matter then.

Look closely at the mounting flange holes.

Yup. Tried it both ways and it will only work in one way.

Thanks.

I should have tried it before posting but with engine down I'm not taking any chances of doing it again.

I think this is the second rtime I've heard mention of a green O ring. I think (not sure) the new O ring put into my car was a sort of orangish-red color. Is there any significance to the color? Admittedly I have not done a search on it.

Yes, the green ones are supposed to stay soft longer. I would get one if I were you.
