Stone Guard Installation 84 911

Anyone ever install stone guards on the wheel wells? My question is: "Is it self adhesive"? Anyone also know if some 911s came without them?

THANKS!

They're like big stickers. The trick to installing them is to spray the area with a soap and water solution, mount the sticker, adjust position (slides around with the soap and water), and then squeeze out the soapy water with a bondo spatula or squeegee of some sort. It's a pretty easy project. Oh, and you need to partially pull back the rubber rocker trim for the install.

This trick works better for me:

lay the vinyl face down on a flat working surface....peel back the wax paper backing partially ( about 1/2 way) and now use a scissor to cut the paper. Re-attach the paper so that you now have two wax paper backing sections that touch each other.

Place the graphic where you want it and use masking tape to hold one side in place ( not along the entire perimeter). The masking tape will act to "keep" the piece where you want it.....but the portion that is not taped down is now lifted in the air...remove THAT half of the backing....put it down on the painted metal...and now remove the masking tape and finish off placing the other half down by taking of the backing.....

That's how I put my spats on...no worries... I did the bottom most section last..and yes... I used a rubber spatula to lift the rubber edging...so the very final portion can be rolled on the painted surface...remove spatula...and press over the entire area with your fingers.

Harder to describe than to do...

THANKS!
I don't think they came on 911's from the factory, but were added aftermarket by their owners.

On the widebody cars, like a Turbo, they were put on by the factory to protect the paint from rocks pitched up by the front wheels, etc.

SoCal:

Respectfully disagree......

My narow body ( well... "in -between", being an 85 Carrera with the SC/Carrera flair) picked up an "awesome" rock chip....very deep and about 1/4" across..on a high-side of the leading edge of the flair...just as if it was a Turbo.

I fashioned a Turbo look-alike spat but ever-so-slightly larger to cover the blemish after I filled it in with some paint. Used Ray Allen's "Wing Walk"...an aircraft walk-on part that is very close in thickness and texture to the Turbo spats used OEM.

Don't intend to be a Turbo "wanna-be"...just trying to avoid a $6000 ( or whatever) respray on what is otherwise a perfect paint job on my car.

I'm funny that way ..

I like the way the stone guards look on narrow bodies. I thought I saw some magnetic ones. Any one use them? They ok?

JP911,
so it is just like tinting glass windows then?
I also get chip on the 1/2 front of the hood bad within 2 weeks of drivning mostly freeway, (slant nose). Do you know if the clear window tint would work on paint (hood)?

The clear Stongard would help avoid a stone chip..but once it's created on a painted, unprotected surface....the clear isn't going to cover it ( natch ! ).

Tint film is not thick enough in my humble opinion.
Ona positive not, there are are special transparent adhesive based films that are sold and installed by pros. Not sure of the long-term impact on paint or color fade.....

I've had clear Stongard on my car ( example: front side of flag mirrors...rocker panels behind rear wheels) for over 10 years and no fade and no yellowing. Use quality 3M stuff.

Will "slightly" yellow in this time frame if on the rocker next to the catalytic convertor ( temp issue). Also...can be removed at any time with the aid of a hair drier.
