Unusual 915 Transmission Problem - Need Help (update)
First off I would like to thank all of you who responded. Knowing this BBS is here when the need arises sure makes problem solving a lot easier.
As you have read in my previous post, my P-car was in 2nd gear and all of a sudden it would not accelerate even though it had not slipped out of gear. This morining I looked under the car and low and behold the outboard CV joint on the passenger side had come un-bolted. Randy, you got it right. The next question I asked my self is why? Recently I installed a new wheel bearing on that side. When I reinstalled the CV joints, I used the old gasket on the inboard side (tranny side), and used a new gasket on the outboard side (wheel side). What I found out was that I did not torque down the new gasket properly. By this I mean if you tighten the first bolt, tighten the opposite bolt, do the next adjacent bolt and opposite bolt the same way, when you come back to the first bolt it is still tight. What you have to do is tighten them in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction until you get them to the required torque. I didn't do this. I did tighten each bolt and opposite using that pattern but I never did check them sequentially. What happened was the gasket was never compressed properly, so the bolts were never torqued as they should have been. When you tighten them in sequence, the first bolt compresses the gasket a little, then the next bolt compressit a little and so on until you come back to the first bolt which is now needs to be re-torqued again. You repeat the process until you reach the required spec. I went around the bolt pattern about five times before it finally fetched up to the proper spec. I removed the shaft, cleaned everything up, greased and reinstalled it. I was lucky that it happened at the house and not on the highway. One other thing, you can check to see if the CV Joint is disconnected by doing the following without getting under the car. I discovered this when I was sitting in the car running the engine and going throught the gears before I looked under it. If the drive shaft is disconnected and the tranny still works, if you place the shifter in 1st gear and let the clutch out, the speed-o-meter will bounce a little. If you then shift to 2nd gear, it will start to show a increase in speed. So, this is a good indicator that the tranny still works but the shaft is disconnected. Thanks again for everyone's help, got the P-car back on the road and am looking forward to enjoy driving the "Road Worrior" once again. Fantastic! Glad it wasn't anything more serious. The common recommendation, after installing CV's (or axles) is to torque them as you described, and then check the torque in 100 miles or so.
Might not be a bad idea to have a look at them every time you're under the car. Happy motoring! Randy

Always good to see some pics of some nice rides. From the e-mails, I can tell there always seems to be a pretty good showing out there.
Might be a good idea to start making the presence of the ATL Pelicans known in the Regional Board. Randy
