Header questions
What are some of the downsides/upsides to headers as opposed to heat exchangers? Can they be run on all engines (ie. carbs, mfi)? What changes need to be made if any? Finally are they worth considering or not. My heat exchangers need replacing and I cant afford the big $$$ SSI's right now so I was wondering about headers as an option. I dont drive the car in winter so the heat is no problem. My engine has Weber carbs and 2 in 1 out exhaust. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I made some 'Factory' headers...
I sawed off my rusty heat exchanger sheet metal to be left with just the header :) Worked great and my temps droped 15 degrees on average. Didn't even have to take the things off the car! Tools: cutoff wheel connected to a drill and sheet metal sheers... The header pipes were in good shape as they were protected by the heater boxes. -Michael |
Make sure you obtain the adequate diameter of headers for your particular engine. If you can do without having a heater in your car then you are all set. SSi's and headers are going to give the same performance. I have heard that headers give some vibration with certain mufflers but, I cannot confirm particular brands.
