To be honest, in the 2 years I have owned my Ferrari I have spent more on my 911.

The people I know that own both (porsche/Ferrari) spend more money on their Porsche, Because they drove the **** out of their Porsche and looked at their Ferrari.
I wish I had that problem

I have put 10K miles on my F355 in the 21 months I have owned it. This includes track time and a round trip between Dallas and New Orleans at 100mph. I would have done better but I was injured and could not drive a manual tranny for about 4 months.

Like any car, the more you drive it the better it runs and the fewer problems you have.

I am too new to P but.. tHe key is your 911 is 15 years older than your F355.

Very true. My Porsche is also a track car which requires a little more care. Though it has also seen far fewer miles than the Ferrari in the last 2 years.

I do think Porsches are more reliable and less costly in the long run, but its worth pointing out that the Ferrari myth is a bit overstated. Of course if something does go wrong with the F-Car, the costs for some of the parts can be deadly!

That's about right if you go to a dealership and nothing else is needed. At an independent its about $5K. I had mine done just prior to taking delivery, at the seller's expense, and should be good for 3 more years.

I may try it myself when the time comes, the engine drop on a 355 is actually pretty easy. Of course it would have been nice if Ferrari designed an access panel behind the seats so that the engine would not have to be dropped. They did this on the 360.

On the plus side, the tranny can be rebuilt without dropping the engine. The bell housing is in the rear, just take off the rear bumper and the muffler and have at it. Try that with a 911.

My current 911SC with 65k miles is by far the most expensive car I have ever owned, but last year I lost the broken head stud lottery, and hopefully it will now be fairly inexpensive for many years to come. This is actually the first car I have ever rebuilt an engine on, but the most miles I have ever had on a car is 135,000, which was a BMW 5 that was still going strong when i sold it. My current 7 series has 128k and is still going strong, and has been pretty trouble free, though the trans is starting to act weird. Heck, my wifes Explorer has 117k with only oil changes since new.

I'm wasn't ripping on you at all. Nice call having the seller pick up the tab on it. Aren't the clutches super spendy, too? The cost of ownership is high on those; be honest.

I paid more than $10k for the timing belt service for my 348 spyder now I'm waiting for my new F430 cheaper to maintain and can be a daily drive

I also have a G-class and it's not a costly car

I think they might be lumping the 911 Turbo (930) in with the rest of the NA 911s...thus ruining the cost of ownership average for Porsche! HA!

I think all in all Ferrari is the grand champion for maintenance costs. Let's compare apples to apples here.

1995 Ferrari 355 to a 1995 Porsche 993

Both of these cars are very reliable when serviced under the correct intervals. A service job for a '95 Ferrari 355 is easily 3 times the cost and much more frequent then that of a '95 Porsche 993. The Ferrari needs some kind of service every 10-15k miles. The Porsche goes much farther for longer intervals. Let's not forget Ferrari's policy that if you do not get your oil changed at the dealer ($350) with the special Ferrari Shell Helix oil, your factory warranty is voided. Talk about ouch.


I would be interested in knowing service costs and maintenance issues with the new 1000bhp Bugatti coming out.

Cost to own is irrelevent unless it includes depreciation. The net cost of owning a Ferrari is much less when you consider you'll get your money out of it--or more--when you sell it.

I heard that a VW Phaeton drops half its value the first year. Hard to imagine much worse than that.

Judging from the cars on the Forbes list (and those missing, like Ferraris) it likely takes depreciation into account.

Do the MBs drop value that fast? I know the SLs used to be known for that, since the poseurs who buy them only buy them because they're the latest model.
