Vibration based, periodic rumbling(clack,clack . . .clack)
 

My 88 Carrera coupe is starting/shifting(just put in a new clutch!)/driving great however I am noticing (in neutral at idle) a sound that is kind of a "click, clack"-- "click"-- kind of uneven and a bit different in sound level though it is generally a quiet-ish sound -- i can hear it from over my left shoulder in the cockpit but it's not as noticable with the lid up and ear searching alongside engine-- it seems unrelated to throttle and just kinda pops a clack or two off here and there- it seems outside of the engine seems almost like a vibration clacking/clicking- maybe a mount is loose? i'd love a little feedback- thanks guys!

what if in gear, with clutch in?

i will check in about an hour and a half when i get home and ill put up the result here- do you have an idea? thanks

there is no difference in the sound whether the clutch is in or not- i just warmed it up well and took it out- the mumbling clutter seemed to get a bit louder, though still relatively subtle, as it got warmer- it shudders and kind of rattles when turning the car off- (the sound is a quiet and periodic rumble that resonates within the flare on driver side)

I do have an idea - some part of the shift rod or something attached is hitting something and making the noise.

But here's what to do - get another person to listen and to move their head around to different parts of the car. If that doesn't do it, then have them do it from underneath while the car is on jack stands or a lift - they may need to be very brave to do that.

Next step: use a stethoscope or microphone to diagnose.

im going to have my friend take a look tomorow- i think you may be right or on the right track- it is definitely something that is loose or sim. and "tacking" subtlely and unpredictably against something, if only minimally- - hoping we just find something that needs to be tightened down or adjusted slightly- ill keep you posted- any more thoughts from anyone else are welcome too- thanks randy
