Cosmetic Differences: 83 thru 89?
I am sure this is a common question, but I couldn't find it when I searched. What are the cosmetic/visual differences between 911's throughout the 80"s?

dash vents got larger in 86 for better air flow. third brake light was also added up at the top of the rear window in 86.

Torsion bar access hole size increased in '87 I believe. Windshield antenna from '85 on, CMSL relocated in '86(?) from periscope to inside top of rear windshield, some variation on this maybe and as usual don't take my word to the bank
 Oh, another. Wheel sizes changed over time with 15's then options for 16's finishing with 16's in 7" and 8" as standard in '89. Again I think that's right.

Well the 83 is an SC....the others are the less desirable Carreras....

The Carrera's had the moving 3rd brake light after 86. The center reflector went from PORSCHE being in black letters to a watermark type. The metal trim was lost on the front and rear windows in 89. Exact years I'm not sure but someone else will chime in.

In 1985 the seats changed in appearance and they came with power adjustments. The steering wheel also went to 4 spoke in 85.
Then like was mentioned, the dash vents got larger in 1986. On the outside the SC's through 1983 had their fog lights separate from the front valance. The 84 Carreras had them built into the valence. |

sway bars got bigger in '86 as well. They went from 21mm to 23mm I believe.

A few off the top of my head
- 78-83 SC have: fender mounted antenae some had chrome window trim fog lights that hang out of the front fascia "sugar scoop" headlight rings 6" & 7" fuchs usually 15's SC script on engine lid not-to-stylish seats even the sports are a little chunky looking 84-86 Carrera integrated fog lights in front fascia H5 headlamps bit lower factory ride height Carrera scrpit on engine lid 6" x 7" Fuchs usually 16's updated seats, heat and dash controls 87-89 Carrera Only visual difference is the rear "Porsche" reflector 78-86 the script is in black 87-89 it is red reflective also in 88 the rear fuchs were 8's I'm sure others will add more.
