Engine Mount Install Process?
Well, I finally figured out why my car all of a sudden started shifting really really bad..... broke a motor mount.
The engine is hanging a couple of inches low on one side, that just can't be good. I ordered a couple of WEVO mounts, and I have to do it in the parking lot at work. I drove it here broken unknowingly, but now that I know I don't think I should abuse the poor thing any further. I'm going to have a floor jack, a couple of jackstands, and some rachets/wrenches. What else do I need? What's the full process I need to go through? Since the one mount is just hanging I thought I'd undo the bolt, jack the engine up to where it's supposed to be, try to assemble the WEVO mount and get it bolted in, and then do the other side later. If anyone is going to be in/around Auburn tomorrow, help wouldn't hurt, I'm really not all that mechanical. :D |
You have it about right. I would carry the weight of the engine on the jack or the jack stand rather than one mount at a time. You may need a long punch or long philips head screw driver to use to "lever" the engine into the right place. Once you have the mounts bolted in, you can use the puch to keep things in alignment (as a helper raises the jack. I wouldn't let the engine hang from anyone mount unless it is supported by the jack or a jack stand. Use a piece of 2x4 between the jack or jack stand and the engine. You may also want to consider changing the tranny mounts. The process is roughly similar. I replaced hardware (bolt from mount through engine cross member) while I was in there.

The process is very simple.
Place a jack under the center rib of the engine. Lift slightly to take the weight off the motor mounts. remove the two large bolts that hold the engine cross member to the mounts. Lower the engine down a few inches. Remove the two motor mounts in the chassis. There are two bolts/side. Replace with new mounts. Jack up engine and reinstall the two large bolts. torque all to spec. Project done. Should take you about 30 min to do the whole project. You may need to jack up the car and support it on stands if you don't have enough clearanace under the motor. This will depend on your jack. you only need to lower the motor far enough to gain access to the nuts on the lower side of the engine mounts. good luck. |

The mount actually pulled all the way through, the top big washer has several cracks in it and just bent and let the main large bolt fall through. |
