Carrera tail paint scheme

I've recently purchased a Carrera tail that is painted guards red, including the central grille area. Most, but not all, Carrera tail pictures I have seen have the grille area painted black. Were all OEM tails painted with a two color scheme: the car color with the grill area painted black? or did some come in a single color? Any idea how difficult it would be to mask off everything but the central grille area and paint the grille black?

Thanks,

Easy to mask everything except the grill. Use a flat black. Best look too IMHO.

When I got my car, the deck was all red. I recently (during the summer) had the complete car repainted, and the shop returned it to the original lock (with the black), and I think it looks so much better...

Thanks guys for the advice.

I think the flat black grille paint may look the best too. Anyone else think the flat black is the way to go?

Thanks Wil and SoCal, I think I'll go with the Wurth trim paint. It loos like they have "satin" black trim spray and Europen blend Matte black lacquer... I guess the satin black trim the best? Also, is a self-etch primer coat required/recommended? Thanks again...

I think it's called "satin" black and I would contact Wurth ( or look on the can) for pre-priming instructions....

I can't help with the color as mine is all black on a black car but here is a pic of the paint scheme on my '88 carrera cab. I'm certain the paint is original. The screen is flat. The louvered area is a kind of splatter/matte. Might be tricky to mask those radius borders. The rest of the non rubber area seems to be same paint as rest of car. Tricky to take a good picure of the thing.

msterling, Thanks much for posting those pictures. That helps a lot, and I agree, masking the rounded corners is going to be a bit tricky...
