Angry Engine Smoking

If my car sits for a day, when ever I start it, it will smoke. When I rev the motor a little and a minute or 2 later the smoke will stop and I will not see it the rest of the day.
Should I be worried about this?

What is the cause?

What can I do to make it go away?

Go ahead I can take it.

Does anyone need pictures?

Thanks for the help again guys...

Pretty normal for 911's to puff some smoke on startup. I wouldn't worry about if it goes away once the engine starts and your oil consumption is not high.

What Ianc stated is pretty much the consensus here. However, my '83SC has no smoke, puffs, etc.

Most flat sixes with some miles do this. Oil is getting past the valve guides while the car sits. It can depend on the angle that the car sits at. It also may depend on the exact position the engine shut down in. Try to idle it aobut 20 seconds before you shut it down on a flat surface. I find that helps.

As stated above, if you do not have any significant oil consumption, this is of no concern.

Also, don't overfill the oil. When I first got my SC I kept filling the oil to the top of the mark. It would quickly go down to the halfway point.

I finally figured out that if I fill the oil to just the halfway mark the car uses a lot less oil.

Did the excess oil cause your engine to smoke more than normal? Did it spill out?

What Year? MY 70 smokes a lot on start up for about a minute after sitting a week or so. I figured it was related to oil settling into the engine as mentioned above and working past the seals.

Other then that the oil consumption is very low, mostly ends up in a drain pan I place under it when I park it.

No visible smoke when running after the oil returns to the tank.

Is there a check valve somewhere to prevent the oil tank from draining into the case?

Thanks, Ron

not blue

Its a 1974 2.7. The color is not blue just white. Goes away after a couple of minutes of running. I dont know what the oil consuption is because I have not tracked it.

If it's white it's just moisture.

If you have to "track" oil consumption, you are safe. Excessive oil consumption definitely is noticeable. We are talking a quart every 500 miles...
