Moaning
My '86 Carrera sometimes makes what I would describe as a low-pitched moaning noise at low rpms. It usually occurs from just off idle to around 2000 rpm, and its pitch varies with rpm. I'm thinking (hoping) it is an accessory (alternator or A/C compressor). Anyone had a similar experience who can point me in the right direction?

No similar experience, but if you can reproduce the noise, then disconnect the belts to AC and alt and run engine for a very short period (< 30 sec) to test your theory,

Mine has made a similar low pitched howl as you've described, but only right after a cold start up. Goes away after engine is warmed up...
It's done this for 7 years, and 75k miles with no problem...

In the morning, when you start it up and hear that moan.
Put you finger on the AAV located just above the oil filler neck and feel for vibration and hear a hum. (be careful as the car is running..watch your tie and fingers) Also: Check your fan and Compressor belt for the correct tension and...do you have all 6 shims?

It's the black, round diaphram located just above the oil filler neck. It has 3 hoses coming from it.

I had a strange sound at low rpm's on my SC. After weeks of 'what the hell is that' I replaced the toothed belt with a solid belt. Noise gone!

This sounds like what my 2.4 T does. At low revs, not all the time. Its carbed with no ancilaries like air. Be interested in what you all find.
One thing, the car does no charge and the idiot light is on always. I think this started about the same time the groaning started. Haven't looked at yet as I dirve it so little I just put a trickle charger on. |
