Clean up after seat removal

I'm removing the rear seats and considering getting rid of all the carpet and painting the floor. What do I use to get all the carpet gunk off the metal?

Jeff

You need something stronger, if you want the sound / heat insulation off. Generally something called "aircraft stripper" which will likeky have methylene chloride in it. It ain't good for you but will eat that gunk out no problem. Note that I have never done this but am planning on it.

I would vote against the stripper. You really should'nt use if if you can rinse it off completely, which is difficult in the rear seating area. The 3M stuff works, it just takes time. Use plently of gloves, a respirator, and some ventilation.

I agree, the stripper is used when you take your entire carpet, seat backs etc. out to prep the car for just paint or an RS carpet kit.

"methylene chloride... ain't good for you"

That's quite an understatement. It is one of the most toxic chemicals available to the average person.

A respirator is NOT enough protection. You need to wear a suit that is impermeable to the stuff (rubber glove material). It readily absorbs through the skin.

I would never use this stuff at all. You'd probably be safer injecting gasoline into your liver...

Mental note....

Things to avoid, Methyl Chloride.

Thanks, duly noted.

BTW Thanks for the laugh.

I just did this. It's not really fun.

I went the wire wheel direction mounted on an air powered die grinder. It flings crap all over the car, but it does the job. It took me about 2 hours of grinding to get all of it out. I then used some MEK to clean up the left over spots.

As you can see, the wire wheel will get down to bare metal. I'll repaint the entire area and then I'm going to use this stuff to keep the noise down.
