993 caliper powder coating & rebuilds

Hey all

I am embarking on my 993 brake adventure.

I have what I believe to be a good set of low mileage 993 front calipers, which I do not think need rebuilding. They are scuffed and somewhat ugly looking, so I was following some threads on having them powder coated.

I noticed that when they are PC'ed, they seem to get powder over everything, bleeder screwes, crossovers, etc. In the event of a rebuild being necessary, would the PC get destroyed, meaning splitting the calipers, or would it be more of an internal rebuild?

Also, my local PC shop wants shop time ($300 minimum, 60/hr) to do anything, so I am thinking of sending them out (esp. once the machining is done on the rears). Anyone know a good shop, hopefully on the east coast that knows calipers, and won't have to have their hands held on what needs masking and what doesn't?

Thanks!

l`ve got a complete rebuild seal kit if you`re interested. l powdercoated mine and they turned out great. All the tubing/bleeders are removed and rubber plugged and a special tape is used to cover the inner areas.Do not split the calipers though.like all paint work the prep is what matters.

raceman, are you happy with your PC job? Should I ring him, was hoping for an east coast shop.

l`m pretty happy with the job,the shop was detail oriented and the price?l think l paid $40.00 for all four calipers.l did the disassembly and the shop sandblasted and coated the calipers in the right shade of red.One thing l didn`t expect though was that the powdercoat melts on contact with brake cleaner.Be careful there amigo.Overall though l`m glad l did it but if l were to do it again l`d pass on rebuilding the calipers,it wasn`t nessasary and the kits are very expensive

Wow, brake fluid melts it!!!! Yikes, not a good match. Are there any other coatings, I think even epoxy paint would work better!

I've used powder coating for many years on my motor cycles, engine cases, wheels and even on my exhaust pipes... and it does not melt with brake cleaner ! paint does get melted by brake cleaner. sounds like you got bait and switched.
on powder coating what brake cleaner does is dulls the surface, not even smeared.
