Injectors
I want to clean my injectors. I have a question. Do they need to come apart to clean them? Also what is the best way to do this at home to get the best results?

From what I've heard, it's best to remove them and send them to a place like this: http://www.rceng.com/service.htm#INJECTOR They can clean and balance them on equipment that you don’t have. There are numerous injector cleaning services out there, just do a google search on injector cleaning. I got the above name from a reputable source, but have not used them myself.

I have alway run fuel injector cleaners in the fuel. On disassembly for rebuild carbon not excessive. Fuel injectors went back in as is. New fuel lines/pumps yes, but injectors on Motronic fine. And my SC it was same thing, kept them clean, and they keep going strong.
Regards,

This ia a 89 carrera and it sat for five years in a stoage unit until last month.
I'm having problems getting it to start. the past owner tried to get running and couldn't afford to get it fixed. He did put a new fuel pump on it. So now it also has new sensors 02 sensor, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, DME relay . It will kick with starting fluid.Yesterday it ran on it's own for the longest time yet. I've done all the tests, cleaned the grounds and think the problem lies in the injectors. ( I HOPE) The wires on the sensors were trashed. the plugs were the worst I've ever seen. The cap and rotor and wires were trashed. I'm wondering if the plugs have ever been out of the engine. I've tested the injectors and have power and pulseing so the next step is to clean them. Any thoughts on this? |

You don't mention what you've done with the fuel tank (clean & flush), whether you have fuel pressure or flow to the filter, out of the filter.
Plenty of threads concerning the starting of a car after being in storage for many years. Injectors may be plugged with old fuel (varnish now) but start upstream at the tank and work back to determine where the restriction starts. Do a search on this forum.

With the fuel pump on, do you have fuel flow after the filter?

I let the pump run before I reinstalled it to the new fuel filter to clean out the fuel line from the tank. Today when I took the fuel rails off to remove the injectors the rails were full of gas. But no I didn't do what you asked.

My 88 had two bad injectors. It would be a great idea to have them cleaned or get 6 new ones.

This is where my fuel injectors will be going before the engine is put back together. $12.00 for each injector plus shiping. Can't imagine not doing it for that price. New injectors are well above $100.00 each. My injection system is comletely apart for cleaning and dressing up while the engine is being done.

I sent my injectors to EBS for rebuild and flow matching.
They sent a chart with before and after spray pattern. About 1/2 the cost of new ones AND new ones are not flow matched. Good Luck Chuck I have an 89 911 also !! Last edited by chuckr; 12-25-2005 at 07:12 AM.. |

It sure sounds like sixbangers injectors are glued shut. Can you hear them click open? I also think these injectors are operated with current peak and hold mode so don't try to open them with the battery. |

Well I removed the injectors and cleaned them. Before I installed them I tested them with a D cell size battery. They worked great. So I put them back in and after the major job of putting everything back together I got the chance to start it. Guess what happened.
After three tries it started right up.But while installing the clip at the top of #3 injector I dont think that the fuel rail was down enough on the injector because it looks like it didn't get clipped. Do washers on the fuel rail mounts go on this side? There were two washers on the other side. It doesn't leak. I just can't see it that well.I'll have another set of eyes look at it and see if they think it is on ok.Also on the pass side of the engine there is a small hose with a screw in it that I have no idea where it goes.It lies on the tin at #5 spark plug wire. I haven't driven it yet but hope to soon. It seems to run great. Nice and tight the way I like it. Thanks to those who gave input to help me. |
