I think I'm ready to replace the valve guides!

After assembling this Jeep on Christmas Eve (with the help of a handful fo Bud Lights) I think I am ready to tackle the worn valve guide issue in my 87 Carrera! My wife called from the store and said she was buying the Corvette - I told her that was out of the question, no son of mine can be seen driving a Corvette! So here is their winter car, and check out the bumper sticker Wayne!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1135636380.jpg

Merry Christmas

That's pretty cool! Just keep them away from any large steep hills!

I was checking those things out at Toys R Us a couple weeks ago and saw a fire engine version that squirts water. I wishing I was three again.

Flyer88 12-26-2005 03:14 PM

Yea, this has a FM radio and my 2 1/2 year old likes to put his Ipod (kids version by Parents) on the dash. You'll never be three again, but watching them play sure takes a couple of years off!

Doh.. those damn Brogan boys are at it agin! ahahahahaaha
GREAT pic!

rexav8r 01-05-2006 01:38 PM

Uh-oh...

I can see it now....

Mo Brogan has to bail his kid out of Juvenile Lock-Up for DUI...

(Cop) Uh, Mr Brogan... Your son says that he was hauling this case of iced down beer in the back of his jeep to the neighborhood party for you.

(Mo) That's right officer.

(Cop) Then how do you explain the fact that your 3 year old failed his breathalizer test ???

(Mo) Why that little brat !!! I told him that was MY beer, if he wanted some he could drive home and get his OWN !!!
Serves him right !!! Little Irish Thug !!

I gotta get one of those for the kids so they can drag my brews to the neighborhood parties !!!

Flyer88 01-05-2006 04:34 PM

Yea, and drag your butt home!

ianc 01-05-2006 07:41 PM

Aww, what a rip! I wanted to hear about your valve guides! You sucked me into this thread under false pretenses!

Good point ianc !

Bill, are you going to tear into those things ???

What exactly is your situation with them. I know you've said they're pretty well worn. Are you going to do it or have it done?? If you are going to do it I'd like to help ! I can even help photo document it.

ORDER THE PARTS TODAY !!!

:D

fuelie600 01-06-2006 06:41 AM

And I'll document Richard documenting it....

How about a double drop the same time as Erik's?

I know my car will need this sometime.... I dread it....

Maybe next year - I go through a quart every 4-500 miles and compression and leakdown tests show good #s, so I guess that means guides.

ianc 01-06-2006 08:20 AM

Any sign of fouling plugs Bill?

ianc

Flyer88 01-06-2006 08:32 AM

#6 was fouling at the start of last year but we replaced the fuel injector and it has been fine since. Also went to NGK plugs at that time (bosch previously)

ianc 01-06-2006 10:50 AM

Thanks Bill,

I'm getting bad fouling of one plug but the cylinder has good compression. I haven't done a leakdown yet, but that would not necessary show a guide problem. I suppose it could also be a broken oil control ring as well.

You've given me hope that maybe I'm not ready for a top end yet. ;)

Yea my injector was barely spitting - chek that first, $80 part. Do you get a bunch of smoke at startup or after idling for 5 minutes or so?

ianc 01-06-2006 12:03 PM

Haven't seen a bunch of smoke at startup, no. Don't really idle for 5 min either. Just noticed poor idling and missing. Pulled a plug and fouled. Will check it for leaks tonite, maybe try to get a used one to test with. Thanks for the info,

ianc

Flyer88 01-06-2006 12:30 PM

Sounds like the injector - mine was really obvious, only trickling.

ianc 01-06-2006 12:44 PM

Were you able to watch it flow then? Was the injector removed from the fuel rail for this, or did you test it in the car?

ianc

Flyer88 01-06-2006 05:02 PM

I didn't test it myself - still getting my feet wet (that is why the heading of this thread is tongue in cheek). I'll check on the procedure and let you know.

ianc 01-06-2006 05:24 PM

Never mind. I just stopped off at S-Car-Go on the way home tonite looking for a used injector to try, but Rob King has an injector tester there. I'll just pull both my fuel rails tonite and bring them in to him tomorrow. Thanks again,

ianc

Cool - maybe it'll help the Carrera keep up with the old SC! Let me know how it works out.
