Porsche Crest Seat recovering

I am thinking about recovering the leather front seats in my 79sc ,can anyone recommend upholstery kit suppliers and is it an easy job or best left to the experts. I only use the car at weekends so I dont know weather to use vinyl or go for leather again, does the vinyl look cheap in your experience or can you not really tell the difference at a glance. Your help much appreciated..

I recovered my seats a few years ago in a vinyl/leather looking kit that I purchased off EBay and it looks/feels and wears great. I am a average backyard mechanic and it took me one weekend to do both front seats at a leisurely pace. You have to disassemble the back from the bottom, once that is done it's obvious how the old cover comes off and the new goes on. Modern materials can feel and look like leather but are somewhat cheaper, ofcourse each persons personal taste is different. You might be able to find a auto shop near you that you can bring the old covers to and they can make you new ones useing the old ones as templates and then you can install them. Really depends on how much time/skill and money you have to invest in the project. Good luck.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use Original Fit Interiors.

Good luck!

I bought a kit from Inland Imports (www.inlandimports.com). Nice quality, they have an instructions page on how to do it. They sell hognose pliers and rings. A weekend is about right. I used vinyl since I live in Florida and the sun and heat kill leather.

Just an FYI, use steam to streach the seats when putting on the new material. It cuts the risk of splitting the seams.

I would also check with a local small upholstery shop, they would likely put them on for $100.

Porsche Crest

Thanks for the input guys ,I think I will try and have a go at installing the covers myself as it will give me something to do over the winter months. Cheers
