Chain tensioner rebuild kit
 

I'm searching for rebuild kits for my stock 1974 2.7 mechanical chain tensioners. Pelican dosen't appear to have them. Anybody know where I can get them?

Just curious, why aren't you going to oil fed chain tensioners...cost only, other reason?

From the information that I got on this BBS, the pressure fed tensioners are not foolproof and can also fail as well. Re-built mechanical with the safety collar sounds like a pretty reliable setup unless someone convinces me otherwise.

I went the same way as you, just keep an eye on them every 15k miles or so and when properly set up the mechanical tensioners are bullet proof.

-My local mechanic has had a number or pressure fed tensioners fail over the last 5-10 years, and no longer automatically recommends them.

as long as the safety collar is on there, seems like it would be an easy inspection about the same time you do the valves. I dont know much about the safety collars, never used them. How would you know if a tensioner failed?

Regular inspection is the key, regardless of which system you get,

re-sale down the road will likely be better with the Carerra tensioners, but real world reliability is not an issue so long as you re-install correctly, and inspect every 15k miles or so.

Is tensioner inspection simply removing the tensioner covers and checking that the chain is tight or is there something else I should look for?
