Chain tensioner rebuild kit
I'm searching for rebuild kits for my stock 1974 2.7 mechanical chain tensioners. Pelican dosen't appear to have them. Anybody know where I can get them?
Thanks Harry |
The dealer for about $20 each.

Just curious, why aren't you going to oil fed chain tensioners...cost only, other reason?
|
From the information that I got on this BBS, the pressure fed tensioners are not foolproof and can also fail as well. Re-built mechanical with the safety collar sounds like a pretty reliable setup unless someone convinces me otherwise.

Harry,
I went the same way as you, just keep an eye on them every 15k miles or so and when properly set up the mechanical tensioners are bullet proof. -My local mechanic has had a number or pressure fed tensioners fail over the last 5-10 years, and no longer automatically recommends them. |
as long as the safety collar is on there, seems like it would be an easy inspection about the same time you do the valves. I dont know much about the safety collars, never used them. How would you know if a tensioner failed?

wow...thats a confusing post, sorry bout that

Regular inspection is the key, regardless of which system you get,
re-sale down the road will likely be better with the Carerra tensioners, but real world reliability is not an issue so long as you re-install correctly, and inspect every 15k miles or so. |
Is tensioner inspection simply removing the tensioner covers and checking that the chain is tight or is there something else I should look for?
