Early Heat Exchanger QUIZ
Why do you never see any of the original heat exchangers from the earliest cars around.
![]() scroll down for answer Answer: It turns out that these heat exchangers had a seam for the exhaust tubing inside the clamshell, which rusted in use and was a potential source of carbon monoxide poisoning. These heat exchangers were the subject of a comprehensive recall by Porsche, which replaced them all with the "S" type from 1967 on. This was cited in one volume of Up-Fixen, I don't recall which, but will post the volume and page number next time I run across it.

Finding a set of those would be the ultimate score for a 'showroom' clean concours '65. I bet they all went in the steel recycling heap though...
