1977 air (smog) pump removal

Looking to communicate with someone having experience with removing the air pump (smog) system. Pros or cons? Thanks for the help and Hapy New Year.

i just did this on my 1978SC, i'm not sure of the differences between the smog system on the 77 vs 78.
as long as you are smog exempt, then don't worry about it.
(fyi, mine wasn't hooked up and i still passed with flying colors)
Kyle.

Thanks for the reply

My car is 100% as delivered new with about 40,000 miles. (except for chain teninsioner and air box pressure relief valve)

I would like to remove the smpg pump and related parts and also the thermal reactors.

Have you done this? What are the pro's and con's of removing this stuff? I am not looking for magic HP but rather just easier to get to the distributor and other stuff and less heat.

I have also read about fitting a 74 year exhaust system. What do you know about this?

Thanks again for any help.

I'm doing this right now too. I have everything off except the pipe that runs from the muffler to the front right of the engine. How the heck does that get removed?

As long as NC doesn't require a yearly inspection, all you need to do is remove the air pump and anything attached to it. The injectors that go into the cylinder heads can be plugged with 914 caliper plugs(I think that is what they are). I used brass plumbing caps for mine. If you want to keep the old parts be careful in removing them. If not, hack away at any part that doesn't come off willingly. Mine all came apart nicely.Do you have a service manual for your car. It will show how the system goes together. Hope this helps out.

What pipe is this? Exhaust or AIR tube?

Wayne, Thanks for this info.

What about the thermal reactor? What about the backdate to 74 exhaust? Do you have any experience with this?

Thanks again.

The thermal reactors are Porsche's pre catalytic answer to a smog device. They will come off like any exhaust system.

Do a search on the procedure...be careful you don't snap the studs off.

If you remove the air injectors be careful because they could break off in the head (ask me how I know). After that you could plug the holes.

In four installments; note that in most cases the narrow neck mid-year exhaust studs will break if you attempt to remove them without using serious heat (oxy-acetylene or mapp gas torch until they glow red) on the nuts. I was fortunate that the PO used anti-seize compound on the threads the last time the exhaust and air injectors were removed/reinstalled from/onto the heads.

This one. It was connected to the muffler and runs forward and up into the front of the engine somewhere.

Yellow arrow is pointing to a filter in the EGR line running from the muffler to the EGR valve located on the front passenger side of the engine. See the threads posted above. Jim

Yeah, what Jim said. Mine did now have that filter/EGR thingy.
My SC is a Euro so that may be the difference.

Jim-

Where did you get these plugs?

This pretty much looks like the pile on my garage floor-except for the EGR pipe and filter?

Yep-as you were responding I was reading. Nice write up.

Looks like you fabbed a plate to cover up where the egr pipe attaches?

Also, the EGR valve stays?

Plugs came from Metric Multistandard Components Corporation

http://www.metricmcc.com/

Larger plug (for muffler EGR port) required modification.

Pelican also carries a version of the smaller plugs; I believe they are 914 brake caliper plugs.

EGR valve blanking plate was fabricated from aluminum sheet and the EGR valve was left in place.

my egr was completely removed when I got the car. I removed the pump etc and used red loctite on ss plugs. The plugs were expensive.

My thermal reactor replacement so called header was thick flange. My SSI wound up for an SC with the O2 bung. SSI sold me a plug for it and an extra bung just in case of a future bright idea.
