fuchs engine oil

Recently my car was serviced at a different workshop, and the oil used was fuchs engine oil compared to castrol whichw as in previously.

Then today my friend who is a mechanic saw the Fuchs hi-tech lubricants sticker on my windscreen and started telling me how bad the oil is compared to Castrol and how their trucks have ran poorly on this oil etc.

Now I'm concerned my car has a sub-standard oil in it.

Please can anyone tell me whether this oil is OK or not.

Also, the car is a 3.2 Carrera. Should I be using mineral oil or synthetic?

Cheers

RG5

Don't worry about it. The differences in today's motor oils are so small that it is nothing to worry about. There may be superior products for your car, but there is no need to worry that what you have in there will do any harm.

I am a believer in synthetics for Carreras but how much additional benefit you might realize over conventional oils really depends on your application.

There is no way that they could detect a difference in the way a vehicle runs on different oils. The requirements for the different SAE grades are so high that all oils are of very good quality. There are only a few differences that can be seen.

If you operate the car in temperatures lower that -10 degrees you can see a noticable difference in the way the car warms up if you use a true synthetic.

If you look at long term wear (especially if the engine is seeing high temps) you will see differences.

You might see differences in levels of deposits.

The fact is differences in oil are mostly paying for ultimate longevity and insurance to make sure nothing goes wrong.

BTW - Castrol doesn't have the best reputation. If you are going to pay the extra money for synthetic there are much better oils out there.

Thanks guys. According to my mate, he reckoned that the Fuchs was much thinner than the Castrol for the same grade, and that the trucks made a burning smell when running on the oil - as though the temp of the engine was actually burning the oil inside the engine.

Also, he said that the trucks consumed several litres of oil compared to runnning on Castrol, and that also some trannys had failed running on the Fuchs. He even went on to say that a local business which makes transmissions almost went bust running on Fuchs oil as so many transmissions had failed allegengly due to the Fuchs oil!

Given this voiciferous derision of the Fuchs I thought it best to ask the question before demanding my mechanic to empty the olive oil out of my car and putting something decent in.

Sounds like my mechanic is exaggerating a little from your responses!

I would be afraid to go to a mechanic who cannot read the specs on the containers of the various kinds of oils to use for the different types of engines and trannys out there. The manufacturer usually specifies what lubricants to use (in case of motor oils the type regular or synthetic, viscousity range 0,10, 15W-30,40,50 etc, SAE rating up to J now, in case of gear oil GL-# 5 for 915 gearbox). Just follow the owner's manual rec from Porsche and all will be well.
