Adding footwell blowers to SC
I've got a couple of footwell blowers from a Carrera and want to add them into my SC (need good window defogging up here in the north of England).
I'm looking for advice on what extra kit is needed to add these such as resistors, speed control switches, etc. I know the best way is to get the whole kit and loom from the Carrera, but it's not easy to find, so I'm looking for how others have done it. All advice welcome. Thanks David 1982 SC |

David I will get this thread bumped and hopefully others will chimes in. The footwell blowers can be plumbed into any pre 964 car. Along with the blowers you will need the hoses that connect to the blowers. You will need the covers for the blowers and for wiring you just need a switched and fused 12 volt connection. Most people just use an aftermarket switch. If it would be helpful for anyone I can take a few pictures of mine to help you out.

I put in the extra bowers on my 78SC.
I got the 12V control feed from the heater switch between the seats. This way the blowers go on when you pull up the heater controls. I used this signal to switch a relay that I added under the dashboard and ran the power feed from the fuse panel. Ground the motors to the body with a sheetmetal screw. The hoses can be cut to fit the fans if they are not too old and brittle. Make sure the hoses don’t get disconnected in the trunk (boot) when you’re playing around with them. Be prepared to have the fans shriek when they start. It’s a fault with the brush design I think. Otherwise they work fine. The heater/defroster performance is greatly improved. |

Did this last winter on my 78. I picked up power for the blowers from the original fan relay in the engine compartment. I made a harness that runs from the rear fuse box to the center console where I mounted a fan speed control switch. From the console I made another harness that runs behind the dash [inside the trunk] that sends power to each of the blowers. I had to fabricate a resistor network for the speed control. Those power resistors, I think they were 50 watts are mounted on an aluminum plate and live in the passenger footwell in the opening next to the blower. You could also go with the factory ceramic resistor but I recall it being pricey..although what I did was over kill. My system works very much like it did originally. You lift the center levers and the blowers come on. My speed control is wired so that anytime you call for heat the blowers spin. My feeling is that the rotating blowers will prevent the bearings from heating up and/or the plastic from melting. I measured heated air temps above 250 degrees! Also, both blowers have inline fuses for protection. I'll see if I can find my notes on the install. It was well worth the effort.

My footwell blowers in my '84 Cab caused the power wire going to the fan control slider to smoke out and burn. I have sent power directly to the blowers and they both work, but I suspect they had a current draw that overheated the wires. If I was to rewire to handle the blower motors directly by bypassing the heater slider, what size fuse should I use? Is it possible to buy a rheostat to get variable speed off of these fans?
