First Day Report of Steve Wong Chip

Met up with Steve last night and put a chip in my 88 coupe which is otherwise stock other than chip and bilsteins- oh, and fatty tires on twists too (i know they're heavy i run my fuch 7/8's too- anyway, i know there is a lot of SW chip stuff on board but I wanted to kick in my two cents before i get used to the chip and its offerings- i will report again later on in the month after some more serious driving- initially, ive found:

1) crisp idle right off start up- no hunting

2) great power throughout - lots of power on hand in first and slow rolling second- very very nice for Los Angeles where you can find yourself in 5-10 mph average traffic quite often and the stock chip made it difficult to have any life at slower speeds

3) Feels like a beast at 5k- felt good before but now it (the power) is right there- ready to go and instantly- no lag- it's screaming at close to 5000 in 5th- (that's all i could get on the 10 here in Los Angeles- (i am so scared of tickets)

Steve is a pleasure to deal with and just threw the chip in for me in his garage- his driveway is super steep and i "tapped" on my way out (angle and all)- anyway, 24hrs into SW world and i am happy with the result- it is all that i had hoped for-

A pic of my 88-

Beautiful car John.

How wide of a tire did you go in the rear?

Thanks in advance.

Maholos- they're 255's out back and 225's up front- handles so nice here in the canyons of LA-

Hey John, nice chatting with you yesterday - and thanks for the plug!

That's another one for our side!

Dkennel 01-04-2006 04:02 PM

Thanks for the post, that is exactly what I wanted to hear! I think your 88 is exactly the same engine as my 87 Carrera. I think I only have the 24 pin chip though.

indigowhale 01-04-2006 04:02 PM

SW help me solve a way annoying problem with my idle and I have yet to buy a chip from him (bier budget)--many thanks Steve! My car is running tops now. That is one nice 88!

Ain't nothin like wide hips!:D

Isn't this where lorenb chimes in and tells everyone with e SW chip that they are wrong and its all in their mind or that their engine will blow up in 25 seconds?

Another one who uses the Pelican web site to obtain product info and then buys elsewhere,
to be expected of the typical uninformed DIYer and suppliers that bypass Pelican.

jbrinkley 01-05-2006 02:32 AM

ya but can you call pp and talk to Steve directly? it costs the same either way, and being more informed about your car is the name of the game.
I didn't get mine from pp either, guess i'm a typical uninformed DIYer

I had the exact same results with my 3.2 powered 77 backdated car whn I installed my Wong chip. :D Big smiles from me and Steve was really helpful. He has even offered a free upgrade after my car visits a Uk based Dyno and he has dyno results.

He is a good guy.

Typical post from an uninformed BBSer.

Nearly all of us agree that those who use the BBS should support Pelican when we purchase parts, however we should also recognize that there are occassions when Pelican is not the best solution to a particular need.

John went to Steve's house and had Steve install the chip. I don't remember Pelican offering that service. Steve offers custom programming for virtually any modified set-up, Pelican only offers stock and sport exhaust options.

Blind allegiance to anything, be it a politician, a vendor, or a factory's specs, is dangerous thing.

Very happy to hear of your positive experience, John Carlos. Welcome to the ranks of the "uninformed".

sammyg2 01-05-2006 06:36 AM

Now I'm really confused. Loren has posted over and over that aftermarket chips don't work and they damage engines, but now he is suggesting that we buy these "bad" chips from pelican?
I guess it's ok to buy something that is bad, but only if you buy it from one specific vendor ;)

johncarlos2003 01-05-2006 09:28 AM

You're right Loren- I feel so bad and I am totally uninformed and a real looser. You are the most knowledgable and a big winner. I am so sorry that I don't do things your way but I am willing to learn. Please, enlighten me! Oh, can I get one of your chips? Actually, forget it, I'll pass for now.
****Hey guys- im not even worried about ol Loren- Loren who?!! anyway, my girlfriend just spend some good $'s with Pelican for my Xmas gifts- we should support Pelian whenever possible- as far as SW vs Pelican for the chip of course I went to Steve's place- he's the man with the plan plus Steve and I live like a mile from eachother- Anyway**** I took a drive this morning for about 30 minutes and man does it feel good at low RPMs around town- that is definitely my favorite effect so far- (NICE! M491- where'd you get the clear lenses- they look great-)

bigrubberjeep 01-05-2006 09:48 AM

Mike - (M491) what does your license plate say?
