1982 911 warm up noise
I have a noise that occurs only on cold start up on a 1982 911sc with 185,000 miles. There was a top end rebuild at 151,000. It sounds like something out of balance but goes away after 15-20 seconds. It appears to come from the back of the engine. It makes the noise with the alternator belt removed. The engine runs great and sounds great when warm. I know it's a vague problem, however, are there some possible areas to investigate? The chain tensioner and guides were replaced at 132,000.

In cold weather like we have here in Minnesota....911 engines can make some funny noises. 20w-50 doesn't flow too well at 20 deg. If it sounds good when its warm.....that's a good sign.
I hope this helps..... Regards, Aaron Hatz Flat Six, inc. www.flat6.com

I did notice that it made more noise than it normally does the other day when I started it. It had been sitting in a garage at about 30 degrees. Do you know if there are any tell tale signs that the timing chain may need to be replaced? The service order for replacing the chain tensioner lists a "chain tensioner kit". I assume that the chain is not part of a kit.
Thank you for your previous response. |
