Is the plate that covers the fuel pump structural?

My question is, does the plate add stiffness to the sway bar mount or is just to shield the fuel pump/ steering rack? Right now I have it removed, but if it is a structural member of the suspension I will put it back on.

Any thoughts?

This is for the 87.

It is not structural, but it does keep a fair amount of sand and gravel at bay.

Jeff,

Just be sure that it's not too light to protect the fuel pump above it.

Many a time I have gone off the track, was glad that it was there; got some dings and bumps, but never broke and thus protected the pump and the steering box.

Once off road, it also retains lots of dirt and grass that came between it and the body. LOL.

If you want to save some time, Thom has already done it in fiberglass:
