Ruf,
I am troubleshooting my Ac system and have ran across several informative posts from you on this topic. In my 87 I have tracked my problem down to the green wire that comes into the condenser blower relay on the main relay panel from the ECU. This wire does not get voltage. However, when I apply 12v to this wire, the whole AC system works excluding the condenser blower which seems to be bad as it is getting 12v and ground. Any idea's why this wire may not be getting 12v. I tracked downs the wires path using the Bentley manual but have not tested the wire coming out of the Dme.
Thanks for any help.

In the mid year cars, the condenser motor was not on a relay and when the motor went south it sometime took the wiring harness with it. A fix was to add a fuse to the condenser motor circuit so if the motor seize, it would not take out the wiring harness.
It sound like the relay in the smuggler box is not working, or the system could be low on freon and the low pressure switch has disable the power to the a/c relay circuit. When you apply 12 volts to the wire you are back feeding the circuit.
Connect a set of gauges to the high side and low side of the system and turn on the system, even if you have to back feed. Does the clutch engage the compressor/ If it does, what type of reading are on the gauges? The low side should be around 35-40 psi and the high side should be around 150-200.
