Is this my trans problem?

It's a '70T 4 speed. I can drive it for 15 mins or so and it shifts fine. After that first and reverse start grinding and if I drive long enough 2nd will act up too. However, when this happens, and i have to come to a complete stop, I can cut the car off push the clutch in and put it right into first and start it back up without the car jumping forward. Of course, it's not good for the starter to have to do this every time i come to a stop. Is trans fluid getting on my clutch and making things stick or is it somethimg else?

thanks,

allan

could be that your particular brand tranny fluid is too slick once it gets warmed up causing the synchro's to function incorrectly. The synchro's work best with a friction fluid like swepco. My car always used to shift best when it was cold. I put swepco in and out 3 times until I knew the good stuff was really in their. Shifts very well each and every time now. I hope this helps.

the clutch probably needs to be adjusted tighter. 70/71s are a bit tricky. how far off the floor does the pedal move to get the car moving?

I'd say about about an inch and a half. I'll check tomorrow after work.

I have adjusted it several times. It seems to help for a short period - a few days and then its back to this.

kind of close to the floor. grab the knob on the very end of the cable with needlenose visegrips and lightly pry with a screwdriver between trans case and visegrips to determine how much slack is in the cable. adjust the two nuts on the sheath to eliminate all but 1/8" of slack and see how that works.
