Coupler bushings replacement...does it come apart?

I made it through the shifter bushings replacement (relatively unscarred)...but I will be darned if I can figure out how to change those in the coupler, does it even come apart?

Cheers !

push out the pin using a vise. use a bolt or something smaller than the pin on one side and a large socket on the other to receive the pin.

Check out these brass ones. www.esells.com/ecitemlist11.asp?CO=NC&CMD=SRCH&AIMCID=4937&AIMDID=44409
I wish I hadn't done mine already.

I purchased the brass bushings from our host.

I do notice more tranny noise in the cabin since this upgrade. I replaced an the bushings. no more slop.

You need to punch out the pin as JW mentioned to replace the bushings.

I've posted on this before... I prefer the "firmer and less-slop" press-in 914 hard plastic pieces over brass.

Why?

The action of the joint requires a true universal joint. The brass restricts motions to one plane..it doesn't "work" like a true universal. The hard plastic will be "better" than the slop unit used for 911's...yet will "give" a bit better than brass. OR...use a true universal like the Stomski unit and such....

The possible consequences of "forcing" a brass unit beyond it's movement limits is add'l trans wear...

Do a search...there is a long thread with pro's / con's of each method described.

- Wil

EDIT... look what Wevoid and Chuck Moreland have to say here-------> Shift coupler for 915?

...not many are heeding this sound advice...

Given that it is an easy job and I already have the "plastic" bushings, I might as well put them in rather than put them in my "left over porsche parts box". Thanks I appreciate the help, I don't know where I would be without this site....(probably driving a Civic).
