As far as driving the cars go, you won't notice any difference. they are both excellent.

Bill - 79SC now with 82 engine.

I think that Carl_Boehme had it mostly right (at least according to my source) - the 1980 model also had the rubber-centered clutch. The Porsche 911 Red Book 1965-1999 states the following - "1981: 911SC models reverted back to to steel-spring clutches after problems with the rubber-centered units."

That is true for US spec cars. But 81-83 euro models retained the air pump, no oxy sensor, and no cat cis system. They also retained the larger runners and ports.

Also, my 81 row had a stock spring centered clutch disk when I changed it a year ago.

Although none of these things matter to the original poster since he's changing the engine anyway!
