bad ignition coil

Is there a such thing as a coil "going" bad or is it a "it works or it dont" thing?

It definitely is not always binary, good or bad. It can be in between. That means it can work sufficiently up to a certain rpm, it can work okay up to a certain temperature and it even can be intermittent, meaning that it works fine for a while and then gives up for a few minutes, only to be okay again ...

Hope this answers your question,

George
