1984 Carrera windshield fitment problem revisited...

Okay, so here I am almost 4 years later, the windshield has always leaked but fortunately I cover the car and don't really drive in the rain too often.

I had given up on trying to have Safelite fix this and had another glass place try to goop the upper corners into place to no avail. I found my original paperwork and checked the warranty, it is LIFETIME so I have contacted safelite again. After some convincing, the manager at the local shop said he would make good on this glass... very encouraging. Anyway, in an effort to try to save time and confusion, here is my problem:

After seeing a couple of ebay auctions last week for Sekurit glasses, I checked the PET (dated 1986) there seems to be some funny-business going on with a part number change in 1985. I know they went to an integrated antenna in 1985 but was there a size change or gasket change as well? Is it possible that I have a late year 1984 that actually takes a 1985 glass? :confused:

The windshield I have is a PPG and the sizing on the invoice is FW00193, I saw that one of the 1985 Sekurits that were on ebay had a FW00574 or something along those lines.

If anyone has any ideas, I would be most appreciative! Thanks!

The only size change made was in the end of the line 89 and possible 88 cars. These can be seen by the trim having no metal beading in it compared to earlier cars like yours. They made one windshield at this time to fit the 89 C2 also. The one is slightly larger and enables the trimless gasket. Others have used the later gasket with earlier (pre 88) windows with differing degrees of success. Usually there are gaps and the window does not fit tightly. Things varied on the late 80's G50 over the last 3 years so its hard to put a specific year for each change.

Thanks for the reply, I've heard the late windshields and trimless gaskets don't really work on the earlier 80's cars, I strongly suspect that they used a 964 windshield when they did the replacement.

I definitely didn't want to cop a position with Safelite w/o being sure this wasn't due to some Porscheism.

Front windshield replacement is my 'first' project when my 84 comes out this spring, and I'd love to know the part #/cost you end up with.

My brother used a C2 89-94 windshield with a C2 gasket (or a 1989 Carrera) on his 1987 Carrera that had a older style gasket (metal bead). The fit was ok. There was some gaps in the corners, but that could be more due to the installer. I would expect this to be the same for earlier cars.
