Up Scrubbin' der Porsche. Suggestions
I want to take advantage of the heat wave on the East Coast and clean the underside, transmission and engine on my '87 Coupe.
I know that pressure washing is not recommended. Any suggestions for removing the grunge? Thanks Pete 87 coupe, 3.2 G50 03 Boxster 69 MGB |

Pete,
I've done this various times. I lift the car remove wheels and get under it on a creeper. Wear your worst clothes and a diving mask and snorkel (he he he). Tons of water, dishwashing liquid and/or simple green and a semi soft brush work wonders on the under carriage and pan. For the tranny and engine, there's tons of engine cleaners out there which are reportedly safe for the materials. You'll be surprised at the amount of dirt that gets accumulated on the pans...

Why is pressure washing not recommended? I do it every 6 months or so, and have no problems - Am I making things bad???

Kroggers, You don't want to push / force water and dirt where it shouldn't go. A degreaser (Zep, Simple green, etc) a brush and a light spay from the garden hose will be enough.

Be sure to rinse off degreasers (like Simple Green) really well. It will eat AL parts!

I think with Simple Green you should not just rinse a lot but actually brush off the residue even if it looks clean.
Also, my experience has beenthat soft brush just ain't gonna do it. In all those little nooks and crannies especially on the transaxle you've got to use a tapered parts brsuh, both a large one and a smaller one and stay with it over and over. Once you do get it clean it is much easier to keep it that way.
