What should this sell for?
I am retiring and moving soon and in a effort to put together a some cash I'm thinking of offering the "Queen of the Garage" for sale. So what do you all think it should go for?

Would you say a "perfect" S targa would go for $35K? Based on that, I think the rock bottom price would be $25K, maybe up to $30K.
Perfect OEM seats are great, but I'd pull the red paint off the front calipers. Nice car!

Very nice early S ! ! Headlamps are H-1 or H-4's?
Need to see pics, but these orginal early S's are definitely hot in the market right now, and I guess values will be rising for the foreseeable future. What that means is; sell it now and regret the price in a few years, no matter what you are able to get... ![]() Anyway, good luck.. ![]()

Hard to say without a lot of very detailed photos. Nice early Ss start in the low $20s. Exceptional ones can bring three or even four times that. Original paint cars with full documentation obviously are the most desirable but when you are going for top dollar even minor things can really hurt value.
The later front bumper, for example, although considered an upgrade, would likely have to be returned to original. It's all the little details that turn a $25K car into a $50K one. From your description, yours sounds very nice but would take some effort to break into the $40K range. Also, rust, any rust, is a major issue for anyone spending top dollar for a car. Was there previous rust repair? What was the reason, if known, for the touchups? |

The clear coat was buffed through on the hood, and the decklid was crazed from the heat. I had them painted. There has never been any rust on this car. Even the battery boxes are original and rust free last I looked when I replaced the batts 2 years ago. When I bought it we put it up on a lift and the car looked as if it were in a time capsule for 20 years. It only had 65K original miles on it then. I have owned it 10 years and it is at a little over 100K now. I also have the original valance for the front as well as every original part that has been replaced good or bad.

Targa911S,
My Silvermetallic 1970 S Coupe is a fully restored, matching numbers car. It is all as original except for a few very changeable details. The digs on my car would be: Color change - done professionally, impossible to detect except on COA Front spoiler upgraded by original owner - I have recipt. No sunroof - but has factory electric windows. I would not take $50K for mine, at this point in time, as I know that once sold I will never own an equal early car again. I don't need to sell at this time, as well. Personally, I think targas are about 10 to 20% less desireable, but in the final analysis condition and documentation are everything.

You would not take 50K for a car that has had the color changed? Boy I sure would. I know this is a valuable car as it is one of only 729 Targa S cars world built made in 70. It is number 111. But I would certainly take $50K, and not look back. It's just a car. There will be others.

I know jerermy.. I know ....but ya gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes. This is just one of those times. This is not my first 911 nor will it be my last. It IS however the best one. I just want it to go to a good home..that is VERY important to me. I think I will buy a black SC coupe when all this moving / retiring stuff settles down.

hey Jason! How was the move? Are you liking the new digs? Yeah hate to let her go...but there will be another. I just have to get things here trimmed down for the move. I'm selling a bunch of basses too. How long was your Tampa house on the market? Putting mine up first of Feb.

Just as in the 356, the open cars are more collectible despite the fact that the coupe is the classic form. As early 911s make the transition from great drivers to collector status, the open tops will almost surely start to bring a premium. I have no vested interest since I own one of both, but with very few exceptions the market seems to prefer open cars to coupes despite the fact that coupes are better drivers and often better looking than their open counterparts. In any event, good luck on the sale. Your car looks very nice. |
