Where to buy paint?

Where do you guys suggest that I buy paint. I do not need much at this time, just matched to the original.
Thanks, J.

How much is "not much?" If you're doing panels, then your local auto paint supply store can make up larger quantiies. If all you're doing is touch-up, go to www.paintscratch.com.

Good luck!

Since you only need a little bit, and you need a exact match, I suggest asking the local P-Car dealer where they send their cars for body work.

Have the shop shoot/laser your finish for color and they should be able to mix a perfect match.

Be aware that you don't want them to open a NEW container or it's $$'s.

Ask if they have leftover paint that they could use to match your color. Or you could get real lucky in that they may have a car in the shop of similar color to yours and requires just a color tweek to match.

Second vote for www.paintscratch.com for touch up. My 87 is painted a Carmine Red. They matched it perfectly. I know they sell larger quantitiies but it is expensive.

I always counter the painscratch vote with www.towerpaint.com. (gotta keep the balance )

Lower prices and superior aeresol spray tips.

Thanks, J.
It depends on the paint you have on your car. Porsche used single stage for most of the 70's colors, and it is difficult to find them in dual stage. FWIW....paintscratch only sells PPG single stage paint for the 70's colors. I'm not 100% sure, but you might be able to get an older Porsche color in dual stage paint with Spies Hecker.

-J , I go to Mattos pro finishes for all of my local paint needs. They carry a variety of paint and supplies, they can get you single stage, dual stage, PPG, Spies Hecker, Dupont, etc. No affiliation BTW....

edit: They don't have a Mattos in Wi.

Sorry Guys... What I mean by not a lot is that I only need to have a set of mirrors sprayed at this time. I eventually will do the whole car, but do not have it scheduled any time soon.

Let me know approximately how much (pint?) and what type of clear coat, and where to buy a match.
Thanks Again

JCC, since your color is Minerva Blue, you will need to buy a single stage paint (paintscratch sells it) . Single stage paints don't take clear coat. They have a resin mixed in with the paint, so all you have to do is wet sand and buff with rubbing compound instead of applying clear coat. For your project, you can probably get by with a pint, but I always get a quart in case I need extra. (but that's just me and my paranoid self )

Do you want to have it sprayed with conventional equipment? If so I'd seek out a local autobody supply shop.

FWIW, I used the Tower aeresol base and clear on a set of MB SUV mirror covers and they came out really nice. I believe PaintScratch also has the base and matched clear. But as mentioned before their round pattern spray tip pales in comparison to Tower's fan pattern.

Thanks All,
I think I will take them to a shop. I painted my first car and it did not turn out too well, although I was 16 and in a hurry to get it done. Also I do not have an appropriate place to shoot them.

So is there a need for a clear? Rick says yea others say nay?

These mirrors are currently silver, should they be stripped and primed first?

The optimal way to paint is to use a clear, it's how most paint jobs are done nowadays (dual stage method). That being said, it isn't recommended to use clear on a single stage paint.

Note, Rick said he used clear on mirrors for a MB SUV, which likely has a more recent (year 2000+) color code and it can be bought in dual stage paint to use with clear coat.

If you're not going to paint them yourself, take the mirrors to a body shop and ask them whether they can get minerva blue in a dual stage. If they say no, then your stuck with using single stage paint, in which case there is no need for clear.

If the silver paint isn't bad, then sand it down until smooth. Prime, and shoot it with the single stage Minerva. Use some rubbing compund and buff the shine out. Good luck.

Thanks for clarifying, Pari.

I said a matching (Chemically) clear is available. It would be up to JC to choose which way to go.

Thanks Again for the info.
If then I have the choice single or dual stage, is there a preference? Pros/Cons (besides more materials.)?
Minerva is a Metallic, FYI.

J.
