DRUCK PRESS pegged at 5

all was normal with my 83sc until last week i noticed the Druck Press was stuck at 5.

normally, it would rise and lower depending on the engine RPMs.

I took it out, cleaned all contacts and re-installed....same thing.

on a related (?) note, the tach gauge at times swings wildly from side to side once engine reaches oper. temp.

any ideas?

Most likely, a wire cracked/fractured at the Faston connector for the sender. Test by removing connector and grounding it to the block while the ignition switch is on ... if no change, then the wire is open. If the gauge reading goes to zero, then wiggle the wire while holding the Faston grounded, and see if the reading varys or goes to 5 again. If not, clean the connector in vinegar, rinsed off ... then crimp the sides slightly to tighten the grip on the tab of the sender. Clean the sender tab with Brakleen and wire brush, and reconnect wire to see if reading of zero returns. Check sender with multimeter to ground on resistance scale ... should be less than 25 Ohms with engine off.

On the right rear side of crankcase ... look for the external oil line going to cam tower. In the following pic the oil pressure sender is the crescent in the upper left corner ...

ok, i found it....there's a green(white stripe) wire going into it that looks similar to the one behind the gauge....jiggled it a little bit and everything is back to normal.

hmmm....dont you just love when things fix themselves?

Just found this thread. Same problem, when I turn the ignition on the needle pegs to 5 and stays there until I turn the ignition off. I put my engine back in today and everything works fine except the Druck Press Gauge. Did the test above I get about 14 ohms across the sender with the engine off, and about 150-165 depending on engine speed with it on. Seems OK. But I get an open on the wire to to gauge. What plug does this go to. Maybe I have a bad connection from reinstall. I'll check the wiring diagram, but any help would be appreciated.

Found it! Wire goes to the 14 pin connector near the rear fuse box, no 4 pin was corroded. A little electrical contact cleaner and I'm good to go.

In this picture, is the smaller oil line the supply to the oil fed chain tensioner?

thanks
