I have just removed my oil tank and as a bonus I got my "spare" dipstick back :)

And what do you know, my old stick is magnetic (which the new isn't)!

I'll forgot to check if there is anything else different about them.

You should all know there were at least two different oil dip sticks used over the years...different lengths that will show right/wrong levels if mixed up......

nice catch, magnus! ;) it's a keeper!

Just drop a match in there and see what shoots out ;-)

Here is an idea.. Ask a fellow Pelican with a 73 model to provide you with the measurements and make a replacement yourself. You could purchase a dipstick from another application then bend / cut it as needed.

Seems like you could do this for less than $10 (material) plus a few minutes of your time.

What are the different lengths? What's the mesurment for the 3.2l?

Wil Ferch 02-07-2006 05:15 AM

Look up PET for the proper parts numbers... vs. model years.... don't know the actual length differences but the hi / low marking values are different, and so is the length IIRC.

Well, I compared my old stick with my new (which I bought at a Porsche Center).
The length are identical as are the MIN marking.

The MAX however is maybe 1/2" lower on the new.

Did Porsche change the oil tank or did they just change the max so people wouldn't overfill it to much?

I took pictures but forgot them at the garage, I'll post them for the record later if I remember...

Andrew,

The one-piece rear fender/wing doesn't prevent you from removing the oil tank!

1. Drain oil

2. Disconnect hoses & oil level sender leads

3. Remove oil filter, then remove three M6 Allen bolts holding oil filter mount to tank

4. Loosen fender/wing brace mount in engine compartment -- large nut outboard of valve covers, forward of oil filter mount

5. Remove M8 nuts, washers, and plastic shock mount disks from engine compartment side

6. Slowly and carefully lower tank

The above steps should only take 1 - 2 hours ... after cleanup, painting, etc., it will go back in much faster.

You should replace the O-ring for the oil filter mount, and the clear plastic shock/vibration mounts, which tend to be distorted and chewed-up when you remove them.

Cleaning up under the fender/wing will take longer than the rest of the process, so figure on a weekend to complete the whole job. It is well worth the effort, and you will be glad you cleaned up everything!

I'm doing exactly this right now, I would add:

5.5. tape off every orifice of the tank before removing!

Warren, what is "O-ring for the oil filter mount"? Where is that?

bigchillcar 02-13-2006 07:59 AM

safe,
should be the point where the rubber on the oil filter itself meets the mount. i think this is what he's referring to..could be wrong.

Magnus,

The O-ring is 4 mm x 72 mm and fits in a groove on the backside of the oil filter mount ...

If the foam seal around the filler neck and oil filter mount are is saturated with oil ... the O-ring being old and compressed is the likely source of the leak!

safe 02-13-2006 08:16 AM

There is some oil in the foam seal yes, but I thought that was from when you changed the oil filter. At least I always spill a little oil when changeing the filter.

Cant find that o-ring in the pet for my car (77), have they changed the design over the years?

bigchillcar 02-13-2006 08:20 AM

interesting..i don't see it in magnus' diagram either. warren is showing parts for a '73. warren, did the design change? there must be a sealing ring for the tank side, right??
ryan

Early_S_Man 02-13-2006 08:41 AM

I recall reading somewhere that all of the '73 thru '89 tanks were the same ... but the PET diagrams indicate otherwise.

If your oil filter mounts directly to the tank ... rather than an aluminum casting, then the PET diagram must be correct!

cmcfaul 02-13-2006 09:29 AM

The O ring comes with the oil filter. It's not a Porsche part.

Chris,

The oil filter seal is NOT an O-ring ... it is rectangular in cross-section!

The O-ring I am talking about is a true O-ring, 4 mm diameter cross-section, and it fits between the cast aluminum oil filter mount and the steel oil tank!

Haven't thought much about it, but I think it mounts directly to the tank.

I'll check next time I get to the car.

safe 02-19-2006 12:47 PM

Checked my oil tank, no removable filter mount, they must have changed ~74:

I'll post some pictures of the new vs the old dip stick.
Unfortuantly there was no part number on the old stick.
Note the difference in the max position
It would be nice to know when they changed.....
