Spark Plug Wire Cost Questions
 

I've been pricing out tune up kits and noticed they do not include the plug wires on the 993 kits.
Looked these up, and about fainted!
Does anyone know why a set of 12 wires sells for over $400.00 bucks?
Are they made with a rare titanium ore only mined from fallen asteroids?
Perhaps manufactured in space by robots in a vacuum and shipped by the shuttle?
Gold plated ?:confused:
Does anyone know what's different about these $33.00 + per spark plug wire vs. any other high performance plug wire for 1/4 the price ?

Don't have a 993 however, I believe that the principle of "you get what you pay for" must apply.

Several folks on this board have given comments on wires that ranged in price from $22.00 to $47.00 per wire. The latter being OEM, the former developed problems in inclement weather.

So, my personal choice has always been to go OEM but, there are good after markets out there I'm sure.

He rebuilds stock wires using the original ends. I don't have a price, but I understand it is much more reasonable than all new. The Beru connectors unscrew from the wire.

I found his ad in the PCA website or book.
Maybe Pelican will start using him, too.

Thanks, I'll check him out. Just my normal state of confusion over pricing. I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for", just curious what you are..paying for..

I can understand the cost of the spark plug connectors, but not the "you get what you pay for" prices for Porsche spark plug wire. Porsche (or God) does not make wire. There might be an argument for God, but I think Porsche buys it from a German spark plug wire company even though they're in some 3rd world country.

I have a 20" single length of silicone jacketed stainless steel core wire, brand new, and it's racing orange. My "you get what you pay for" sales price is $40 (Two dollars an inch). It's gotta be worth it because ...... you get what you pay for.

Sorry for the rant. "You get what you pay for" minimizes knowing what something is worth.

Getting what you pay for can sometimes have different connotations. You having a P-Car will relate to that. For example; Diamonds are Diamonds but there are different grades and quality. Scotch is scotch but we know there is a difference in quality.

In almost all cases there is a definite reason for price differentiation on similar products (excluding stupidity or naivete)

there is a guy on ebay who sells a really good german aftermarket set of the braided wires for 100. i got a set and they are top notch. they are made by PRV? and they have bosch ends.

My local O'reillys wants $410 for a set of (6) wires, Auto Zone wants $200. My plug wires work OK, the engine runs OK but the wires 'look' old and the rubber bits are crumbling - connector-to-wire seals etc.. I would probably rebuild these wires - high performance wire is easy enough to find and my connectors seem to be in good shape but can you replace the rubber bits that get rotten?
