Thanks for the recommendations Matt. I love what I do.

Michael, give me some details of the condition of your paint job? What year is it? Rust? Faded paint? etc...

914 World has a classic threads section; if Pelican Parts had the same, this one would qualify 100%!!!

No rust. The doors, rear quarters, and tail are good. Door jams paint has peeled down to the metal (no rust). It's the hood and the front quarters that are the problem. Hood paint is just faded, but the front quarters are in need of work. The paint looks cracked. No rust spots, just crack lines running through it. Front window jam has the paint peeled down to metal (no rust).

This is what we do in the aircraft industry. Saves a lot of money and time as you usually only do it once, as opposed to putting the stripper on several times.

Hey...this thread was great for me today. Thanks so much for posting it. Here's my thread about stripping my car:

Why Strip Paint?

Newbie here

Great post on stripping: process & materials. It may be obvious to many, but what is the rationale for stripping to begin with? Is it a situation where rust exists and we need to get down to good metal then lay down primer, base and CC as described?

Are there other reasons for stripping the paint?

On a car with good paint; sanding, then primer, base, &CC would be ok, correct?

This post is a reference from a STICKY in the bodywork forum, seems like it should be placed in the bodywork forum not the tech forum.

I stripped my car in the 80's and I'm doing it again. I noticed, though, that the stripper coming out of my can of Aircraft is orange/rusty looking. There's also some thin water-like something that comes out before the orange stuff comes out. Your pix plus the stuff I used 30 years ago was clear. Did I get a bad can? Used? Paint still comes off but only one layer at a time. One area is taking 3 applications to get to metal.
Also, I was expecting to get to are metal under the grey primer, but there is a chocolate brown THICK layer under that yet. Any idea what that is? Was it some kind of bare metal bonding sealer that was typically used back then?

My stripper would not even touch that stuff on my 81. Don't recall if it was brown. I just left it intact as everything else came off with the stripper I was using. 15 years later new paint applied over it is fine. I did use Glasurit 22 Line top paint and Glasurit two part primer.

Note this thread is as old as dirt.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads26/IMG_20181105_1734565021541470793.jpgThis is what's being revealed. Part of me wishes I would have just turned the car over to a shop to touch up/spot repair, as the paint was still pretty shiny, but after I floated that first 2 square feet on the door I knew I was committed. After seeing an incredible home paint job, I'm actually tempted to go all the way on this and paint also. It's only white...but I am REALLY tempted to go something blue or teal, some non Porsche color blue metallic. I quote another poster--"it's what makes you catch your breath when you see it." Or something like that. White's okay...but...

That stripper turns my brown into mush. Messiest brown slop ever. Holy cow what'd I get myself into.

'Couple weeks later, car still a mess, the man who is to paint my car essentially said, "why don't you let me take it from here..." I turned over the keys, and well, I cried. Now to pick a color.

After the aircraft stripper & scraper, I like to use this large strip it disc on a Makita sander because it doesn't clog like paper does. It removes softened paint very easily.
