Shock Confusion

'74 911: original Koni's are nearing the end (rear only for this discussion):

Per our hosts catalog, 74-89 all use the same rear shock and they list it as a gas shock with external adjustment knob.

Per Koni NA site, they list a rear shock for 72-74 and a different shock for 75-89. From what I can tell, the 72-74 is hydraulic, the 75-89 is gas. However both of them must be removed to adjust (no external adjustment knob).

Something doesn't jive here. Pelican states the rear shocks are all interchangeable which sounds reasonable and I assume it would make no difference if the rears were hydraulic or gas as long as they matched. I assume Koni lists 2 separate shocks because that is the way they originally came, that is 75s and later had different Koni OE shocks than the 72-74s?

It seems strange that Pelican lists an external adjustment knob for their gas shock when Koni doesn't.

Any Shock experts out there who can shed some light on any of this ?

thanks,
jack

The front struts are Koni so Bilsteins aren't an option there and would really rather keep the same brand on all 4 corners.

If the rears are worn the fronts have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

"The front struts are Koni so Bilsteins aren't an option there and would really rather keep the same brand on all 4 corners."

------- meaning you can't go for 4 new shocks?

Didn't mean I wasn't doing the fronts also, just that there is no confusion over what shock goes on the front.

I probably just need to discuss with Pelican, the rear shock they list for this car doesn't appear to exist on the Koni NA website is what is confusing?

This might be of help....see what I say in this thread-->

Front Koni reds/Rear Koni Yellows?

Normal Koni rear shocks are gas and need to be dismounted on the bottom mount to adjust. I don't know of any top-knob adjustable rear gas Koni's ( could be wrong). My set up is low pressure gas front ( with removable top knob) and special sport-yellow, non gas rear...2" shorter shock body for safe lowering...and a top-removable knob, like the fronts.

Since the stock setup I was replacing wasn't gas charged...I didn't want the hassle of re-indexing the rear bars due to the inevitable height change ( rises 1/2" or more) going to hi-pressure rear gas...even though I'm the author of the spring-plate angle calculator ( gussied-up via Widebody911- Thom Fitzpatrick- on a nice spread sheet set up).

Great set up....
