Early ('71) Distributor internals??

I took my distributor out to put in an optical trigger. While in there I figured I'd look around to make sure something isn't about to let go.

I took off the metal plate that sits under the rotor (where the points screw onto). Under it are the advance mechanicals. The mechanicals looked fine but just underneath them there was a VERY thin bakelite-like sheet that layed across nearly the whole opening. It appeared to be cracked and in two pieces. It wasn't binding up or doing anything funky but it wasn't in one piece like it appears to have once been. Anyone know what I'm talking about and if this is a problem? I looked at a '72 parts manual that shows a dist. and all thee parts but this piece wasn't pictured.

While I have it out, if this is GOING to be a problem, I'd like to fix it.

Thanks! I searched, really I did, but missed this.

Warren,

I pm'd you.

Anyone have luck finding dist. parts, particularly the thin fiber bushings, at non-porsche places?

Eric, they are a Bosch part number. I just re-did my '66 distributor, which was covered here:

SIC has them in stock, you might call Pelican, though.

John,

Do you know if the pin that holds the drive gear from on from Stoddard (or if Pelican carries the same thing) will work for me?Do they vary in size?

(You coming to Mid-Ohio this year??)

Eric,

I'll be lucky if I do LRP and The Glen this year. . . but Mid-Ohio is definitely on my list!

I doubt that roll pin is correct-- the 356/912 drive gear was very different, and the pin was held in with a wire retaining clip. Check the link to Glenn Ring's site in my SWB Electrics thread for more photos of that type. The 911 pin is rounded on the ends and will take a LOT of force to drive out, it's probably an interference fit.

Did yours get buggered up somehow?

Let me know how you like the optical trigger, I just took mine OUT and reverted back to two-piece points.

I was maybe being obsessive with my distributor. One of those, well, since I have it out (to put in the optical trigger), I might as well clean, check, etc. So I started taking it apart, noticing the play up and down, and then the broken fiber plate...

Not wanting it to fail in the middle of an event, I started this rebuild process. My big issue now is whether or not the up and down play is a problem (and thus whether or not I should knock out that pin and try to rebuild the parts in the shaft. It seems to have slightly less than 1mm play up and down but NO radial play. I dunno....What do you think?

After reading your issue with the trigger, I'm not so excited about it but we'll see. One thing I didn't understand, why would high temps be blamed on too much advance timing (with an otherwise properly running engine)?

I say fix it, it will be one less thing to worry about. Not that tough.
