towing a 911 with half trailer

I was interested in seeing if there was possibility of doing any damage to the transmission if one were to tow a 911 on a tow dolly. I don't have the space or money for a full trailer.
--- Basically the front wheels will be on the half trailer and the rear wheels on the road. As long as the tranny is in neutral I don't see the harm in dragging the car this way.
Am I missing something?
Anyone see any problems with this?
Anyone with experiences towing this way?

Lock the steering and tow it backwards.

I have heard that you are not supposed to tow any 2 wheel drive with the axl wheels on the ground. You always want the free spinning wheels on the ground. I have no idea about 4x4's....

How many miles????

Not much differance as using a tow bar.....all 4 wheels are then on the ground.

Are you using a tow dolly that push the car up the ramps onto the dolly and then tie down the tires. Not just a short flat trailer!!!

Put the rear wheels on the tow dolly that way the wheels are on the half trailer. Steering is locked rear wheels tied down should be no problem.

When i towed mine, it was a wide body the rear wheels didnt fit, or it was due to a muffler pipe sticking out, so i towed it from San Francisco to Los Angeles, with front wheels locked on the half dolly from Uhaul, no problems at all, just dont forger to put the stick on neutral. There in Uhaul they will ask you what kind of car you want to haul, if you say porsche they will not let you, if you will insist and say you know what you are doing, they will waive the warranty on the dolly meaning if something happens to the vehicle, they are not responsible.

I had the same experience with U-haul when I towed a 944, they wouldnt rent me the dolly, insisted I rent a pricey trailer, I should have told them I was towing a honda civic, then no problem, or maybe they couldnt upcharge me..

I think he is going to buy one. At least he said something about "space....for a full trailer."

Miles will build up if you tow with the ass dragging. The overhang is greater and driveways to gas stations, etc., will be a bother. I think front wheels on the ground, too.

I have never towed a 911 with a dolly and I didn't sleep at the Holiday Inn, so my advice is worthless, except for the miles. You could always pull the cable.

Oh wait, maybe you have a newer car. Do they register miles on an electronic speedo? I think not.

Try A Half Trailer Before You Buy

I attempted to tow my car with a rented half trailer/dolly once. No matter how I mounted the car: front wheels on the dolly or rear wheels on the dolly, I wasn't comfortable with the ground clearance at the back end.

I was moving the vehicle 350 miles and couldn't stand the thought of watching, waiting for sparks to fly from the rear the first time I wend over a decent dip in the road. I ended up exchanging the dolly for a full trailer. No concerns with the car fully loaded.

I would rent a dolly and try it before buying one if you are considering the purchase.

Good luck, Gordo

Does the owner's manual have anything to say about towing the car? That is often a good first place to check for such questions.
