$1500.00 track upgrade/ what would you buy?

just received a check I wasn't expecting ...so it's free money right?

I am pretty psyched about running my car on the track so think I'd like to improve it a little.

I am toying between a pair of seats but don't want to add a harness bar or roll bar just yet. What is a good seat to use with stock seat belts. I currently have Recaro SE. ...just a lightweight street type seat, not much different than the stock ones they replaced.

I am also considering some of those trick Smart Racing sway bars. The car currently has 21/27 sanders bars bilstein sport / HD combination and elephant poly-bronze bushings.

What would you do?

My 2 cents...

Save the $$ for more track time.

That is nearly 4 full weekends at the track including fees, hotels and gas. I would just drive the car as-is and get more seat time.

Now that MSR-Houston is open you won't have hotels so it works out to nearly 6 track weekends. That is a lot of seat time.

fuchs 16x7's and 9's already on it with Toyo RA-1s.

Good point about MSR-Houston. I drove it last week, it's very convinient from my house.

...you know how it is though, it'll get spent somewhere or just blend in with all the other household working capital. ...kind of why I want to blow it on something fun and relatively pointless right now!

brake pads? you'll need them sooner or later when your wear out....

kinda tough to reccommend seats when it should be done in conjunction w/ a rollbar and harnesses....

Cant you pay for track time in advance? It's harder to skill once it's paid for and I'm sure the club wont mind using the coin for a while.

yeah I know. I really would like a rollbar and harnesses in the car but I would also like the option to let my two boys run around with me in the back seats. ...I ran around in my dad's 911 as a kid back there and I remember it being a blast.

maybe, I'll send it over to the paint/detail shop and have some 3m clear-bra put on to protect the paint. ...a limited slip and trans rebuild lay-away plan sounds kind of good too.

Cheers.

It depends how much experience you have right now. A new driver's seat and harness set is a great idea at almost any skill level. If you are not sliding around and trying to brace yourself, you can concentrate on your driving. You'll pick up time immediately and become a better driver.

Suspension upgrades, as you suggested, depend on if you are already maxing out your existing set-up, i.e. are you a good enough driver that your suspension has become the limiting factor?

Track time, absolutely. Your tires are fine and the seat will keep YOU planted in the corners. Go drive it.

Spend the money on your driving skills, not the car- assuming your car is reliable and safe. Additional track time is vital. Data logging is also a great addition- it lets you see what you are actually doing. Much more useful than most of the go faster stuff. Safety equipment is also up front- correct belts and a hans device is less than your bonus. Let's see 5 laps within 0.25 sec of each other, then we can talk about improving the car.
enjoy

I would buy a bolt in / bolt out rollbar (like DAS) get the harness loops. From there I would shop for five or six point harnesses. Safety first, especially with kids... From there I would look at Seats.

The faster you go, and with sticky rubber - chances are you'll be looking at brake uprades too - so better start a kitty.

How about driving school? Would help you get a lot more out of what you already have, and it lasts a lifetime.

Look into an inexpensive race bucket seat. Being held in place while flying through a corner is a good thing. I got a Corbeau seat for Christmas and it looks and feels great. For the price ($280.00) you cant beat it.
Then tires and more time on the track.
Before you get big bars, check your rear sway bar mounts!

Sways - TRG or Smart
Harness bar & Sabelt harnesses - btw, easily removable

Piff, you are done & ready. The rest of your car is already setup A-1.
