I'm looking at two 911's this week and will most likeley purchase one of them. Both are out of state in PA and NJ.
Anyone here from MA done this recently? The Registry site only describes the registration process, including the 5% sales tax, ouch!! What is usually done for insurance? I'd like to fly down and drive home once a deal is done but don't want to be a risk of an accident or registration violation. Thanks!

Are you buying from a dealer or non-dealer? To Register and Title Vehicles Purchased from an Out-of-State Dealer: You must go to a licensed Massachusetts insurance agent to obtain an active insurance policy and have the agent complete, stamp and sign an Application for Registration and Title (RMV-1). If there is a lien against the vehicle, please make sure the lienholder information is complete and accurate. After verifying all information, sign the RMV-1 application. Along with the completed RMV-1 application, you must submit one of the following documents: A Certificate of Origin (new vehicles only), or The previous owner's title, if a titled vehicle (model year 1980 and newer), or The bill of sale and proof of last Registration, if a non-titled vehicle. If presenting the Certificate of Origin or the previous owner's title, be sure the date sold, the odometer reading and the purchase price have been completed on the back. The dealer or the previous owner(s) and you must sign the back of either of these forms. Take the completed RMV-1 application and supporting documents to the nearest full service RMV center. If the dealer is not registered with the Department of Revenue, the sales tax will be calculated at 5% of the purchase price or the National Automotive Dealer Association (NADA) trade-in value, whichever is higher. After completing the transaction, you will receive a registration certificate, new plates and a year of expiration decal for the rear plate. The title will be processed and mailed in approximately six (6) to eight (8) weeks. If you have a loan on the vehicle, the title will be mailed directly to your lienholder. You must obtain a vehicle inspection sticker within seven (7) days of the registration date. To Register and Title Vehicles Purchased from a Non-Dealer: You must go to a licensed Massachusetts insurance agent to obtain an active insurance policy and have the agent complete, stamp and sign an Application for Registration and Title (RMV-1). If there is a lien against the vehicle, please make sure the lienholder information is complete and accurate. After verifying all information, sign the RMV-1 application. Along with the completed RMV-1 application, you must submit one of the following documents: The previous owner's title, if a titled vehicle (model year 1980 and newer), or The bill of sale and proof of last Registration, if a non-titled vehicle. If presenting the previous owner's title, be sure the date sold, the odometer reading and the purchase price have been completed on the back. The previous owner(s) and you must sign the back of the title. Take the completed RMV-1 application and supporting documents to the nearest full service RMV center. The sales tax for a private sale is calculated at 5% of the purchase price or the National Automotive Dealer Association (NADA) trade-in value, whichever is higher. --This assumes you will have a bill of sale and/or title before you pick up the car. Are you buying sight unseen/over the phone? If not, when I bought a car (not the Porsche) out of state, I got an insurance binder from my ins. co and just used a plate from another car i owned - and then I drove the speed limit all the way home. I went to the DMV and cleaned everything up once I got home. Hope this helps Todd

That's the right way to do it, and if you were to have a issue on the way, you'll want to do it the right way.
or go the transport rute, but you should still go see the car. I was just thinking though, if you drive it back now, are you really going to use it for the next few months? -if not, you could still go down to see it, get a PPI down there, and have it transported back, even if it costs an extra 500.00 or so, figure you don't have to title it for a few months, and you'd save on that end. The only issue would be if a transport co would ship a car with-out plates/insur?- |

Robert,
I'm right around the corner in Norwel!! good to see another local on Pelican. I read that on the RMV site this morning. It's a private party sale so I have a call into my insurance agent as well. In the old days, I remember buying a car and just keeping the title and bill of sale in the glove compartment for 7 days untill I got around to registering it. Who services your car locally? I've only heard of Randolf Racing and a shop in Walpole. Any other shops besides Reitzel? Thanks again!

Petrol,
The one car I hope works out is in NJ, between Newark and Philly. I don't mide driving back since I can arange to be down there for work and drive it home. I thought about the transport route but just here too many horror stories. One friend purchased a Cobra replica from AZ and along the way the transport driver or drivers were taking it off the truck to drive it around. I will absolutely see it before I buy it or arange a PPI. Thanks!

Monza,
Actually my name is Todd - my user name refers to arguably the greatest moment in Red Sox history - Dave Roberts stealing second base in Game 4 of the 04 ALCS. I'm a little surprised no other Sox fans on this board have picked up on it! Or am I the only Sox-and Porsche-obsessed person here?? As far as service, I have done most things myself, but I did have a little work done at EPE in Natick - Jerry Pellegrino has a good shop there. I guess there's a place in Scituate called Conway Autoworks but I haven't heard much about them. From what I've heard/read, Randolph Racing has a pretty good rep also. Hey good luck with the purchase. If you ever need help with anything once you get it and start working on it, let me know, happy to help. Look for me in a White Gold Carrera - with Sox plates of course. ![]() Todd

Todd,
HA!!! That is so funny. I have actually seen your posts before and got a kick out of the name. For whatever reason I just spaced on it today and it didn't click. I've heard of EPE but not Conway. It seems like there are more shops on the North Shore than South. Thanks again! I'll post pics once inhand.

I'm presently looking at an '88 coupe in PA and a '90 C4 in NJ. The pricing and condition of each car is pretty close where the '88 has nice mods, suspension, turbo wheels, the C4 is relly nice shape with records, new clutch yada, yada.
Both are Black/Black I haven't been able to find a real nice on ein my budget here in New England and when I have they are either gone too fast or theere are issues thus the out of state search. I have also talked with Dave at Euro locators and looked at the '90 C2 he has listed. The price point is too high for me at this point. I'm looking to spend $18-$22 depending on make, model, cloor, mods etc. Thanks all!

Monza,
I actually purchased my '86 on consignment from Dave Maynard at European Locators. He's a terrific guy, was very easy to work with and he definitely knows his stuff. I don't know if you discussed this with him or not, but if he doesn't have anything on hand that fits your needs, he can find it. I had the same experience you're having - not much luck looking on my own. I was actually considering ebay believe it or not but thankfully didn't go that route. Anyway, no affiliation, just had a positive experience with him. And Vinnie - we loved Johnny - but you can have him at 4 years, 52 million. We have Coco baby!!!
