Installed a leather shift boot-Bling??
 

I've had a leather boot for about a year, and finally put it on. I was looking at the stock boot, which is probably the epitome of a functional design. The leather looks a lot nicer, but is it too "Corvettish"? I guess I'm asking does it fit with the interior of a 911?

I have the same boot, shift knob AND steering wheel in my 73 targa, so I guess I approve.
The differences are my car is all black, in & out, so everythong seems to integrate better naturally. Also no console inmmy early car, of course..:)

Bottom line >> i LIKE it !

My 86 came with the leather boot; I added the same shift knob. Looks good to me.

Yes, the rubber piece is the epitome of a functional design. That's why we like 911 interiors. They are all function.

Especially in your track prepped car, this looks way out of place. Time to throw it on the classified board, so some guy with a slant nose can buy it. Will go nicely with the 80s built in cell phone! :D

Oopps, I just looked at my post and realized i forgot the winking smiley. What was meant as a little friendy teasing came off as an insult that was not intended. My bad.

EF, your interior is WAY busy already. :rolleyes: Three different colors, between the seatbelts, dash and the remaining black. Two different seats. Then you have RS door panels for the lightweight look but keep all the "luxury" stuff, like that leather lined center console. And you want to add more puffy luxury stuff?

The boot looks like a deflated party baloon or a nutsack on a warm day ... :D

It is completely crazy, that that useless boot would cover the entire shift lever, like a victorian dress - can't show any of that dirty lever leg, eh?

Let's see, compare the look of your shifter to that of a Ferrari. (The gated 6 speed plate). Or compare it to an unbooted Wevo Porsche shifter. I hope you feel sorry for what you did to your car now, with that leather sack of potoatoes!

edit: I realize that your seats are the same, but one has a cushion and the other doesn't? Still doesn't change my opinion on that nutsack! ;)

Ed, looks like you've blinged up the entire interior already.

BTW, doesn't bling mean bright and shiny? An aluminum shift knob or chrome gauge bezels would be bling.

About the stock rubber shift boot being functional, what exactly is its function? Seems to me no shift boot is needed at all.

Keep the dirt (french fries from the drive through) out of the shift mechanism. And fingers of little people. An all function race car does not need a shift boot indeed.

George: You are brutal! The red cushion helps with my long legs, and just velcro's on to the seat. So does the Sparco cushion on the passenge side I'll be happy to remove them and shoot another pic? I guess that won't help the "nutsack" look though...:D

PS: To compliment the luxury of this car, I've got a NOS Recaro hand pump lumbar support too! The bulb looks great on the side of the seat.

In the form versus function wars, a shift boot seems like it'd be a very minor battle. Headliners and carpet are useless decoration, too. Come to think of it, why the heck is there a clock in a 911 cabin? Why on earth are there back seats or door pockets?

I personally think the boot looks better in a car with a console, and that the toilet plunger looks better in a car with no console.

I have the same boot on both of our '86's....Question: How do I remove this boot enough to give me enough "wiggle room" to get a wrench under the shift knob to remove it?

The Anti-Bling Revolutionary Partisans approve your leather shift boot because it is easier to clean than the rubber toilet-plunger accordians and adds minimal wt. So there is a functional benefit.

The red stuff has to be changed to the same color as the brown/tan stuff however. Otherwise, your lackey running dogs will be terminated with extreme prejudice.

The cupholder is from Griot's garage, I'm pretty sure. (If it is from Griot's, then you can bet that it's available for less money somewhere else.)

It comes in handy on the 500-mile drives to Thunderhill.

That's funny, I've been searching for cup holders for the last 1/2 hour, and actually ordered one from Griot's. It actually was $1 cheaper than the other similar ones. That must be a first. Of course, I also bought some bookends that look like brake rotors and a clay bar, so it was an expensive cup holder.

If you bought 2 leather boots you could probably make ledherhosen out of them :)

I prefer the smaller boot such as that used on the Rennshift. Less form and just as much if not more function that the stock or leather boot. I'm a stock boot fan, too, though.

By all means install the boot. It will match the wheel and bring up the interior a notch without adding weight! Something to fondle while stuck in traffic.

Well, while I indeed don't like the look of that tobacco bag, I think you realize that I am messing with you boot lovers! You know, inquiring about the looks of your shift boot here in the technical forum struck me as odd. Next thing you'll ask is "do these sparco's make my butt look big?" :D

I was joking Ed. I hope you took no offense in my above post. If you did, please accept my apology. We are all here to have fun and of course looks are a big part of a 911, otherwise we'd pick faster, newer ad uglier cars over the air cooled Porsches!

Man, I wouldn't be worrying about the shift boot. In my opinion that has to be just one of the nicest looking targas I've ever seen - one of the nicest looking 911's in fact. Its beautiful!

Ed, are your door handles chormed. Also it looks like the Targe bar is silve as well, or is that just the lighting? Very nice looking BTW. Though my interior of my '83 SC is completely stock, I have been thinking about getting a leather boot as well. My car's interior is completely leather. The dash, door panels, rear deck, etc. It seems odd that Porsche wouldn't make the boot leather as well. The "plinger" is really out of place IMHO. Where did you get yours?

S2gart: The car was special ordered with the S/S bar and the bright trim, as well as a color to sample. Ain't she special?;)
I got the boot on Ebay from AGLA for $17.95...

PS- I drove two 928's today, an '82 3 spd auto and a '93GTS 4 spd auto:D :D A totally different experience, but talk about the ultimate cruiser...To quote Alain de Cadenet: "bags and bags of grunt". I think having cousins together in my garage is in the cards.
