Porsche Crest 40 Years Ago at Daytona...

Porsche first showed up at Daytona with a Prototype contender -- the 906. In many respects it wasn't that different from today's Daytona Prototypes -- tube frame, fiberglass body, 6 cylinder engine based on their street car, no ground affects. The competition -- similar cars with Detroit V8's. In both cases the Porsche is a bit of an underdog due to the smaller engine size. I don't know about today's race but 40 years ago they almost humbled the GT40s.

BTW - At the time many made a big thing over the GT40 being only 40 inches high. Nobody seemed to notice that the 906 was a whopping 38.6 inches.
