Porsche 930 Vs Ferrari 308GTSI
I understand it will be hard to get a true answer on posting this on a Porsche message board, but maybe someone has been in my same situation.
I am currently looking to purchase either a Porsche 930 (1985-87) or a Ferrari 308 GTSI (1983-85). Was wondering if any of the users here have driven both cars and how do they compete with one another. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks! Ed |

Ed,
Here is a thread comparing the Porsche 911 and Ferrari 308: Trade 911 for 308 - am I crazy? It seems that the main problem with the Ferrari is that it has a cramped interior, and pretty high maintenece. The same probably applies to the 308 GTSI. The Porsche 930 would probably be more reliable, (faster?) and all around more versatile. How are you planning to use the car? Daily driver? Weekend car?

I drove a 308 gtsi and loved the presence and sound. The fit and finish are piss poor (at least the one I saw), and flat out speed and acceleration are almost bang on with an SC. A 930 is of course slightly less driveable due to the longer gears but will ultimately destroy a 308 or 328 in acceleration and top end/

I have driven a couple of 308's including an early carbed and FG one from europe. They do not have much in performance, have a crappy driving position and a steering wheel angle straight out of a greyhound bus. But they look cool and sound great!
Just and opinion, take it with a grain of salt!

If you are seriously interested get Keith Martin's Collecting Ferrari
book. Great info-best bet is a 308 QV-better paint, Nikasil cylinders (where have we heard that before?), and the maintenance is an "engine-in" affair as opposed to the later models. These cars have all suffered their depreciation and won't get cheaper. A stock 930 will walk all over them. I'd love to have a silver/blk 930 and red/tan 308 QV... |

Shouldn't you compare the 308 to a 944? Because that's what a 308 is. The 944 of the Ferrari stable!
![]() As you already expected, you get answers like the one above, if you come to a 911 board and seriously consider a Ferrari. Unless it has 12 cylinders, I would not bother with a Ferrari (that immediately takes them out of my price range, isn't that an easy answer?). But seriously, if you get a well maintained and carefully updated 930, I doubt you can get a bigger bang for the buck these days. Here is the comparison that you were looking for. Your 308 is gettin SPANKED by an SC! Now, I wonder what they did to the poor SC (even with the euro 204hp) to make it go 5.8s from 0-60. http://www.pistonheads.com/features/Default.asp?storyId=9840 And now go to the ferrari board and ask them the same question! I love the 308 and if I never turned my own wrench and/or lived in a larger city with access to Ferrari tech's then I might have had a harder decision. I wanted to DRIVE my car and be able to maintain her myself. There is true DIY support for the 911/930 enabling you to do most work yourself. There is aftermarket support allowing some competition on pricing. Everything for the 308 just about comes from Italy short of racing parts and panels.
I still may very likely add a 308 to my stable as a sunny day car, but I will stick to vintage Porsches and Mustangs when I want to beat on them at the track. I don't need a $5000 clutch job to slow me down.
