Trans rebuilds
My transmission went caput last night! Second gear has been a little tricky for quite a while, but now I can barely get the trans into any gear other than first and reverse at a dead stop. I think I'll go the rebuild route because you never know what you'll get with a used one. Does anyone have any ideas on reuild shops, somewhere near the Detroit area would be great - though doubtful.
Thanks

If you can pull it might be worth shipping it to a known entity?? I hear Fairbanks does a good job, JW in Seattle, TRE etc. etc. I think Motomotions is near Detroit -Souk (user name)posts here.

I sent mine from the San Diego area to John Walker. I used UPS, which was probably more expensive than using a trucking company. But I felt I would be able to have confidence in the work he did. He was reasonable price wise and kept me informed on what was going on. You could probably make a crate and ship it by truck to somebody reputable for a reasonable amount. If you decide to do that, I can give you some advice on making the crate. I learned from John & by experience.

Send it away! The only place I have heard of doing decent stock work on older cars is Munk's in Pontiac on m59

Marv, any tips would be great for making a crate for the trans. I probably will have to ship it, I just know that there are some places out there to avoid. I know I read at one time one rebuilder not to use, I just ccan't remember which one it was. So any tips, positive or negative about rebuilders is more than welcome.
Mudman, I don't think Munks does the rebuilding, just installing, but I'll call up Chris and find out for sure. Thanks

they can be shipped in a well taped Rubbermade 'bin'
check with the recipient and you may be able to ship via bus/Greyhound for a lot less

Just strap it to a pallet and ship it. Also... you might want to consider fixing the 915 yourself. The trans is quite simple compared to other transmissions, and the parts are readily available. I just did my first 915 trans repair last month. I was chicken for sure. But once I got into it, it was no big deal. TonyG

Jeff,
Back in April, 2004, my transmission crapped itself, pretty much like your did. Following the directions I got in this thread I was able to repair it myself. Almost 2 years later, she's still running strong. It sounds like a daunting task, but it really is a pretty straight forward process, if you're even a little bit mechanically inclined. That being said, if you have neither the time, skill, tools or inclination to do it yourself, you'll see in the thread I linked to above that John Walker is the man you want to send it to. John was instrumental in my successful rebuild. He has probably forgotten more about these 915 gearboxes than even the best mechs have learned in their careers. He's a real stand-up guy who will take all the time in the world to explain whatever needs to be done. Honesty and integrity. He's a real asset to this BBS. If you're going to ship it away, ship it to John, you CAN'T go wrong. Randy

There are bunch of local shops here that are real good for the p-car trannies. No need to ship it to far. Check with your local PCA and see what suggestions they have or just do it your self. It can't be that hard its just gears and bearings. Although it is critical for accurate depth settings etc. Call around and see who eruoeast uses or suggests . scfantic lives your neck of the woods drop him a line see who he may know. Good luck
