3.6 conversion no starty
Hi guys
Its been a while but im finally at the point where im ready to start my 3.6. starting point I have the engine in the car with everything hooked up and I just cant seem to get the bugger to start. When I turn it over with the key it seems to burst into life for a nano second and then die, it has surged a few times to 3K+ but then as always it just dies and cuts out I have checked the following: Flywheel sensor gap - how close does this need to be? Vaccume leaks - all holes blocked or connected Fuel in tank - 98 RON, plenty of it Fuel pump - bypassed DME and had pump running whilst trying to start, no change Spark - got one Grounds - all goood and clean So, all you 3.6 gurus - any suggestions? Please chip in with any ideas however daft they may seem. Thanks in advance for any help Cheers David |
Sounds like fun! Are you smelling raw fuel out the exhaust after cranking? Should be pungent. Did you check fuel pressure? Do you know that the injectors are pulsing?
Are you getting consistent, strong spark? Your description isn't detailed. Is your firing order correct? You can check cylinder # 1 with a timing light to make sure it is firing per factory spec. Doug |
I had a similar problem... it was a faulty timing sensor (flywheel sensor).
Spent the weekend trying to set it right (distance) before figuring out the electric connection was toast. I think the gap between the sensor and flywheel ring gear is 1.0 ± 0.2mm |
hi guys
thanks for stopping by and providing some pointers...so, to follow up on suggestions... Deffo have fuel - even had flames out tail pipes after trying to start with some throttle open Spark im not sure about - the fact it fires nice then dies tells me that I must have a decent spark. I swapped dizzy cap and rotor arms and was as carefull as I could be with leads - only thing im not 100% on is bottom bank lead location since I took no pics so had to guess based on how the leads layed. Dont have a timing light - mayeb I should bite bullet and buy one. Dizzys werent adjusted since engine was removed and working fi9ne so I assume that is all good. Flywheel sensor - I have set it as close as it will go without modifying (as per timmins directions) so other than it being faulty im not sure what to fo there. The fail to run is so constantly the same im sure it is a problem I have just overlooked please continue with the suggestions, too cold to go and look now but will check all options in the morning. cheers |
oh yeah matteo, you still comming to the UK?
|
Hey check this thread... my problem was a faulty timin sensor from Timmins too... (most probably damaged in the shipping)

Quick update:
I got a mail from Steve following my last question to him: "What is the part number of the ECU? Is it perchance 993.618.124.xx? If it is 124 and not 123 then it is drive blocked and will just kick but not run." Guess what....I do have a 124'er - bugger! So I'm busy looking for a local 123'er, do I have any other options.....? |

Matteo, sounds cool - Richmond / Wimbledon village is a nice, a long drove to any decent roads however. Do you need to be that close to London?
Yeah, stoked about the engine, everything seems good so far - gona try to take it out for a spin tomorrow Update to follow... |
Yeah.. need to be in London for the biz... Brands Hatch is not that far... short stroll on the M25.
Castle Combe is also 100mph away on the M4... The real roads are miles away... but Eurotunnel is 1h away... |
