MSD & Ignition upgrade

I want to upgrade my Ignition and distributor, what parts should I purchase to to the upgrade.

I have a 2.7L with Bosch Dist and Stock Ignition.

Advice appreciated

I'd get rid of the points.

Is your Bosch CDI Box bad? I sure wouldn't toss it out if not.

Test your spark plug cables and see what resistance they have.

There is no up grade if the stock ignition works well...

what kit can I get to replace the points and how can I tell if it has not been done already. CDI is fine how is this compared with a MSD?

get the Crane XR 700 or if you are looking for a cheaper setup try the Petronix

Look in the dist. and see if the points are in there. If not sure, take a pic and post it.

The MSD is simply a replacement for the existing Bosch CDI box. It does nothing more except for the multi-spark at moderate rpm.

Better start up, diff in revs, but not alot on 2.7s. More reliable than a stock bosch

Going from Bosch to MSD or Permatune isn't an upgrade. The voltage to the coil is about the same, spark duration isn't materially different. If you have modified the engine you might need a different system, but even the legendary 935 used a Bosch CDI's (some a pair of them).

Some people believe that the points are the weak link in the system, but they aren't. With a CDI, the points carry almost no current and will last for tens of thousands of miles. Optical or hall effect triggers are just one more thing to go wrong.

I would focus on making sure the stock ignition system is up to specifications-- check the cap, rotor and plug leads out, and make certain the mechanical and vacuum advance are working correctly on the distributor. That will give you the maximum bang for the buck.
