anyone know where gaiter spring?
I'm trashed trying to get the circlip on my oil tubes. When I asked my NAPA guy for "gaiter" clips he looked at me confused. Anyone know how to order obtain these clips?

Perhaps you mean a "garter spring" used in various "springlock" couplings found in late model vehicle A/C, oil and fuel lines.

Yeah-tell the NAPA guy you want a spring for Ford A/C hoses, he'll know what that is.

That appears to be a regular hose clamp. The gaiter springs, or garter springs, come in 3 or 4 different sizes. I got a bunch of them from the wrench that used to service my wife's old Explorer.
They beat the crap outa the circlips. Ask one of the experienced NAPA guys, he'll know. |

It would have been easier if you had installed the circlip on the OD of the smaller tube. Then you could have slid it into the groove after the tube was installed
But that was then. The tubes aren't going to collapse due to the snug fit of the O-ring on each end. But to make sure they don't, you could insert a length of thick solid conductor wire or equivalent into the groove, then bend it around the groove. Sherwood |
Thanks sherwood. That OD approach wouldn't work on these tubes. I bought the Domestic Aftermarket Brand and they are thick, I was shocked on how heavy they are built the inside vs outside diameter has to be 1/8th inch.

What would be the proper size gaitor spring?.... this approach ( instead of c-clips) was mentioned in a Pelican Tech article by someone doing the oil return tube repairs...been trying to "stock up" on the right parts ahead of time....

I'm not sure of the size. I just brought the tube to the guys at NAPA and he gave me some gaiter springs. I can tell you they don't seem tight but I installed them I had no choice. The passanger side tubes are a cake walk even with the circlips. Also things to consider.
1. Driver side tubes the front really can't be installed without removal of the rear. 2. Napa Slyglyde worked well 3. get yourself good vice grips and channell lock plyers. 4. pray when you put the oil back in none comes out. |
Maybe I'm not familiar with the configuration of your collapsible tubes, but anything you can install in the groove so the tube stays extended should be fine. BTW, it should look neat too.
